Christmas Village Montreux in early December: from Geneva or Zurich?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip for the first week of December to visit the Christmas Village in Montreux. They want to know whether it's better to fly into Zurich or Geneva, considering travel time and scenery. They also seek advice on which city would be best for a first-time visitor staying a few days to explore Swiss history and landscapes.

Key takeaways:
  • Take the train from Geneva to Montreux for a scenic 1h10 ride along the northern shore of Lake Geneva.
  • If you prefer a longer, scenic journey, consider flying into Zurich and taking the GoldenPass train line which offers beautiful views and takes about 6h20 to 7h00.
  • For a more personalized experience, explore the complete town guides for Geneva, Zurich, and Montreux available online.
  • If you want a scenic train adventure, the Golden Pass Express from Montreux to Interlaken is highly recommended.

    Hello

planning on a trip first week of December.  My wife wants to go to the Christmas Village in Montreux.  Is it the train view better if I land in Zurich or Geneva?  I see Geneva is closer however would take the longer trip if the scenery was better.  In addition, for a few days stay and history of Switzerland and landscape, which city for a first timer is better.  I am sure more questions but, appreciate the response in advance.  thank you

    Hello Moray, welcome to MySwissAlps!

That’s correct: Geneva is closer to Montreux. The 1h10-ride along the northern shore of Lake Geneva is certainly worth it.

A trip from Zurich would take about 2h40 if you’d take the most direct route, or 6h20 – 7h00 if you’d like to enjoy the wonderful GoldenPass train line via Lucerne, Interlaken Ost, and Gstaad.

So I’d say Geneva is a perfect option if you’re looking for the quickest trip, and Zurich is a good choice if you’re interested in the GoldenPass ride.

Last Christmas, we took the Golden Pass Express from Montreux to Interlaken, and it was beautiful. You could do the reverse if you would like the scenic ride and view from the train. Otherwise, we also took a train from Geneva to Montreux when we arrived, and it was also very scenic and pretty. Geneva was our favorite more than Zurich personally, but there are benefits to both. Have a great trip!!
