Swiss honeymoon 12 nights Zurich-Bern-Wengen-Lucerne-Tirano: best pass

Short summary – read this first

A couple is planning their honeymoon trip to Switzerland in July, with stops in Zurich, Bern, Wengen, and Lucerne before heading to Italy. They need help figuring out the best travel pass for their itinerary, as they want to visit attractions like the Rhine Falls and do some mountain excursions.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider getting the Swiss Travel Pass for its convenience, as it’s a popular choice among visitors.
  • A combination of the Berner Oberland Pass and the Swiss Half Fare Card may also be a good fit, so compare prices to find the best option.
  • Make seat reservations for the Bernina Express in advance, as they can sell out quickly.
  • Check local travel guides specific to the activities you plan to do for additional insights.

    Hey everyone 🙂

We’re planning on arriving in Switzerland in the summer (July) and will be travelling to a few locations before moving south into Italy.

    The current plan is:

    • Arrive in Zurich (2 nights)
    • Leave Zurich and travel to Bern (2 nights)
    • Leave Bern and travel to Wengen (6 nights)
    • Wengen to Lucerne (2 nights)
    • We’ll then head on to Chur and take Bernina Express down to Tirano

We’re currently trying to work out what travel pass will best fit the journey we’ve mapped out above and any activities we want to do while there. Below is a little more information on what we hope to get up to:

    • While we’re staying in Zurich we do want to travel up to the Rhine Falls.
    • While staying in Wengen we do want to visit Interlaken, Grindelwald, Oeschinensee and the tourist areas around Lauterbrunnen, so I’d imagine we’ll be making use of the mountain rails, funiculars and cable cars. We might have 1-2 days where we’ll not be needing public transport, more just enjoying local hiking trails etc.
    • In Lucerne we’re interested in heading to Mt Pilatus or Mt Rigi

Because our travel takes us to many different locations and regions I’m currently thinking that the Swiss Travel Pass will make the most sense for our trip (2 adults).

We have watched some videos and read some posts on the many different types of travel passes, but find them overwhelming to be honest.

If anyone has any knowledge on our plan and which pass makes the most sense we would love to hear it! Also if there are anything recommendations on things that are must-sees along the way that would be great to hear.

    Thank you! 🙂

    Hi Michelle Mc,

    Very welcome to MySwissAlps.

Congratulations and lovely to hear you will be celebrating your honeymoon in Switzerland.

Yes, it can all be rather overwhelming when it comes to choosing a rail pass for a trip here. The Swiss Travel Pass is super convenient and actually a popular buy for many when visiting Switzerland.

Based on your plans provided, it could be that either (1) a Swiss Travel Pass or (2) a combination of both the Berner Oberland Pass and the Swiss Half Fare Card would be a good fit. To be sure, it’s best to carry out some maths.  We have a guide and a downloadable spreadsheet you can use, thereon the best pass options are displayed.  Here’s the link:

In the meantime, here are our guides to the passes I mentioned, have a read through and compare all the inclusions, it could be that one will seem more favourable than the other:

That’s great you are planning on a ride on the Bernina Express.  If you do have any specific dates in mind, I’d try to purchase the seat reservations soon. They can sell out. These are independent of your travel ticket.  You can safely buy your ticket or pass later on.  All information for a ride on the Bernina Express here:

I hope the above gets you started.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

Thank you so much Yolanda, that’s super helpful! 🤗

From our research these are the passes that we thought might be most useful! We’ll get looking at costs and hopefully that will give us a clear winner!

    Best
