Taking SBB from Zermatt to Geneva Airport

Short summary – read this first

A traveler and their wife are planning to travel from Zermatt to Geneva for a flight at 5pm on May 21. They want advice on how to ensure they reach the airport by 3pm, particularly concerning the possibility of crowded trains. They are looking for tips on timing and possible delays.

Key takeaways:
  • Swiss trains can get crowded, but they are rarely so full that passengers cannot board.
  • To avoid rush hour crowds, aim to depart Zermatt around 9am for a comfortable journey to Geneva.
  • Check the train schedule in advance for occupancy info; it becomes available about one to two weeks before travel.
  • If you arrive early, consider storing your luggage in a locker at the Geneva train station to explore the city briefly.

    Dear all,

Thought I would start another thread so that I do not derail my previous thread. So here’s my question: Me and my wife need to board a 5pm flight from Geneva International Airport on 21st May, Thursday. We need to reach the airport at 3pm and we are thinking of travelling straight from Zermatt to Geneva.

Now I know we can’t anticipate natural disasters like landslide etc but we can anticipate man-made events like crowded trains. So we would like to ask if there is such an event where the train is full and no one can board?? Like a peak hour crowd on the train. Our fear is that we miss a train because it was full and arrive late at the the airport, thereby missing the flight.

We certainly intend to reach the airport before 3pm instead of 3 sharp but aren’t sure as to how much buffer to give.

Hi ivanlyf! Swiss trains can be crowded; they’re rarely too crowded to even board though, and busiest times are morning and afternoon rush hours or tourist high season. May isn’t high season yet, and If you avoid morning rush hours, there really shouldn’t be any problem. Once you’ve picked a train connection in the timetable, it will display expected occupancy per train, using symbols in the ‘information’ column (not availabe for May 21 yet, but it will be one to two weeks in advance).

Zermatt-Geneva Airport takes about 4 hours. You could depart around 9am and arrive about 13am. In nearly all circumstances, this should be more than enough to suffer some delays or other unexpected events. If you arrive in time, you may even put your luggage in a locker at the Geneva rail station and take a short tour around the town, e.g. to visit the Jet d’Eau.
