Three Waterfalls Trail from Bönigen to Brienz

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a hike on the three waterfalls trail from Bonigen to Giessbach with their kids, aiming to finish by 5:36 PM to catch a bus to Brienz. They are concerned about whether they can complete the hike in about 4.5 hours while also enjoying the falls along the way, and are looking for alternatives if they miss the bus.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider starting the hike from Giessbach to have more bus options in the evening and reduce stress about timing.
  • The hike may take longer than 4.5 hours, possibly around 5 to 6 hours, so be prepared for a longer trek.
  • If you miss the bus, a taxi from Giessbach to Brienz is possible but could be expensive, so check prices in advance.

Has anyone ever hiked the three waterfalls trail (starts in Bonigen, ends in Brienz, via Istelwald and Giessbach)? I am wondering how long this hike actually takes as I have seen varied estimates on several different web sites. I would like to end in Giessbach and catch the bus to Brienz, but the last bus leaves at 5:36 and we won’t be able to start the hike until 1:00. Wondering if 4.5 hours from Bonigen to Giessbach is realistic, with time to enjoy the three sets of falls on the way. If we don’t make it to Giessbach in time for the bus, is it easy to catch a taxi from Giessbach to Brienz? The last ferry leaves at 4:30, so that won’t be an option. I don’t think my kids will be up for the final Giessbach to Brienz leg. We are active, healthy people used to hiking but not marathon runners, my kids will be 11 and 13.

It would be safer to do it the other way round, because there are more buses from Iseltwald to Interlaken. This means that if you start at the Giessbach end, you will have the peace of mind that there are buses into the evening between Iseltwald and Interlaken, so you could walk to Iseltwald, then between Iseltwald and Bönigen, if you decide you have had enough you can catch the bus at a number of stops along the lake

    Hi WTandBeyond,

I have no personal experiences on this hiking route, but I have found times between 5 and 6 hrs. One of them is this one: http://www.outdooractive.com/en/route/hiking-trail/bernese-oberland/three-waterfalls-trail/23490946/.

I hope that another forum member has more personal experiences and will share it with us.

You can call a taxi from Interlaken, but I guess that will cost a fortune. You can request a price in advance, try http://www.taxiinterlaken.ch/ or http://www.boedelitaxi.com/.
