Montreux-Zermatt, after GoldenPass Express: reservation required?

Short summary – read this first

Marne and his wife will spend 15 days in Switzerland this summer, using a Swiss Travel Pass. They plan to travel from Brienz to Zermatt on July 23, using panoramic trains and need advice on whether to reserve seats for the train from Montreux to Zermatt.

Key takeaways:

You do not need to make reservations for the Montreux to Zermatt train; just hop on an available train when you arrive. The Swiss Travel Pass covers many scenic routes and transportation options during your trip, which is a fantastic choice for convenience.

I love this site!  I’ve learned so much!!!!

My wife and I will be spending 15 days in Switzerland this summer, using a 15-day (surprise!) Swiss Travel Pass.  We’ll be taking almost all of the panoramic trains between towns, plus lots of gondolas, cog trains and boats for day trips.

On Tuesday, 23 July, we will travel from Brienz to Zermatt.  We have a reservation on the GoldenPass Express from Interlaken Ost to Montreux, arriving there at 12:20pm.

My question:  Do I need to make reservations on a follow-on train that day from Montreux to Zermatt?  Or can we just go to the Montreux station and take an available train?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi Marne,

Happy to hear you are a fan of the site 🙂  That’s great you will be enjoying the GoldenPass ride whilst here.  (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/goldenpass/).

Good choice that you are opting with the Swiss Travel Pass for your trip too :-).  In case you were looking for some purchase options, you can find a selection here:  https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/#tickets

No, you won’t need a seat reservation for your Montreux to Zermatt leg, generally seat reservations are not necessary unless it’s on one of the special panoramic trains.  More information can be found in the attached link:  https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/seat-reservation/

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

Yolanda:  Thanks for the info.  Your Seat Reservation page had a link to the timetable, which indeed did not show any need for reservations.

    Issue resolved!
