Tickets to Mt Pilatus with Swiss Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is heading to Lucerne on June 1 and planning to visit Mount Pilatus. They're uncertain about ticket purchases, specifically whether the Swiss Travel Pass covers the boat ride to Alpnachstad and how to buy the cogwheel ticket for Pilatus. They seek clarification on ticketing options and potential wait times.

Key takeaways:
  • Use your Swiss Travel Pass for the boat ride from Lucerne to Alpnachstad and get a 50% discount on the cogwheel ticket to Pilatus at the ticket office.
  • Purchasing your tickets upon arrival should not lead to long lines since early June is less crowded.
  • If you prefer, you can buy cogwheel tickets in advance to avoid any rush.

I will be in Lucerne on June 1 and will visit Mount Pilatus. I’m a little confused on what I need to buy and where/how. I will have a Swiss Travel Pass. I want to take the boat to Alpnachstad and then cogwheel to Pilatus. Cable Car/gondola down. Is the boat ride free with travel pass and then I need to purchase ticket for Pilatus? Where do I purchase tickets and should I get before I go? If I purchase when I depart boat will there be a line? I see different prices on myswissalps.com – Ticket for Independent “Golden Round Trip” to Mount Pilatus and Ticket for an independent day trip to Mount Pilatus. What is the different between these two? Thank you for any clarification!

Don’t worry about the difference. What you describe above is the Golden Round trip.

Use the Swiss Travel Pass for the boat trip from Luzern to Alpnachstad. Go to the ticket office, which is not far from the boat dock, and buy you ticket for Pilatus. Show you STP to get 50% discount. When you get to Kriens walk down to the bus stop at Kriens, Pilatus Zentrum (follow the signs). Use you STP on the #1 buss which will take you back to Luzern.

Pilatus ticket prices are at http://www.pilatus.ch/en/book ing/prices/

Hope you get great weather – it’s a fabulous trip.

    Hi Ingravallo –

Adding to Rockoyster’s expert opinion., I’ll note that on June 1, the tourist hordes have not yet reached Alpnachstad. Too early in the year.

    Don’t worry about lines.

This may help, although you probably know most of it already:

    Hi Ingravallo,

As stated by the other members you don’t have to worry too much about waiting to purchase your discounted cogwheel tickets.

Should you want to purchase it in advance, you can do so in the following link and would thus have everything covered in advance.
