Alice from Indonesia is planning a 15-day trip to Vienna, Austria, and Switzerland in August, starting in Vienna and returning there for her flight. She seeks advice on whether she needs separate tickets to cross the border between Austria and Switzerland, and recommendations for her itinerary during her travels.
Key takeaways:
With a Swiss Travel Pass, you won't need an additional ticket for travel from the Swiss border to your destination in Switzerland.
Consider getting an 8-day Swiss Travel Pass for your 7-day stay, as it is very flexible and covers many routes.
Consult the SBB timetable for train schedules between Zurich and Innsbruck, as there are direct connections available.

Hello Alice and Welcome to MySwissAlps,
I don’t know much (ie anything) about Austrian trains or Austrian passes but have a look at http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/austria. Certainly if you have a Swiss Travel Pass active then you won’t need a ticket from the Swiss border to your Swiss destnation. But be aware that depending on where you are going in Switzerland it may be cheaper just to have a Railjet ticket from Austria to Zurich (say) than using a day from a Swiss Travel Pass. You may also want to consider http://www.myswissalps.com/eurailglobalpass.
Based on your personal itinerary you should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math. The spreadsheet also includes links to the “Where it’s valid” page for all available passes. Be sure to check those pages for each pass you are considering. Study the map AND read all the text on those pages to fully understand what is covered by the respective pass.
➤ Skip the planning stress. We’ve traveled in Switzerland for years and will design your custom, independent journey from scratch. See how it works

Hi Alice!
I’m afraid we’re not experts on journeys and rail passes for Austria. If you need a pass there, and which one, strongly depends on your exact itinerary.
Here are some options for your journey, considering your stay in Switzerland and the journeys from and to Austria:
get an 8 day Swiss Travel Pass for your 7 day stay in Switzerland: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass. It’s by far the most flexible solution. With a valid pass, your journey from Zurich to Inssbruck-Vienna will be covered as far as Buchs SG. Get an additional ticket from Buchs to Inssbruck-Vienna: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/austria.
get a Eurail Global Pass, covering main train lines in both Switzerland and Austria: http://www.myswissalps.com/eurailglobalpass. You won’t need an additional ticket when traveling between both countries. Note that the Eurail Global Pass coverage for Switzerland isn’t quite as good as that of the Swiss Travel Pass, especially in terms of buses and mountain transportation.
The page mentioned by Rockoyster provides explanation and tools, helping you to find the rail pass that suits your plans best.
As for the journey from Zurich to Innsbruck and Vienna: please consult the advanced SBB timetable at http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable, and read the instructions on how to use it. As you’ll see, there are several direct connections between Zurich and Vienna, without the need to change trains in Innsbruck.

Hi Alice,
I’m afraid I don’t quite understand what you mean. If you order a ticket online, e.g. through any of the retailers at http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy/price, you’ll have to enter a departure and arrival station. Then you’ll also select a travel date and time. All of this information will be printed on your ticket, which is then valid.
