Our path is Zurich Airport to Lucerne, Lucerne to Wengen/Lauterbrunnen, Lauterbrunnen to Kandersteg to hike around Lake Oishenesee, then from Kandersteg to Zermatt. Should we just buy train passes for each leg or will that be pricey??

Finally, we are staying in Mürren but want to see Lauterbrunnen, Grindewald. With the train closing between LauterB and Mürren are we adding pain to see other places while having to return to Mürren every night? Or is it worth the peace and quiet?

    Hi Nitram,

If you are doing a lot of travelling, I recommend getting a Swiss Travel Pass so you don’t have to buy a ticket for each train trip. The Swiss Travel Pass lets you hop-on and off as many times as you wish. not just on trains but also trams, buses and boats. You can find detail information here: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/

Mürren is a good base for exploring the Jungfrau region. There are 2 ways to reach Mürren – the cable cars run at regular intervals so accessibility should not be a problem. You can find further details here: https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-guide/lauterbrunnen-murren/

    Hello Nitram.

I would strongly support Anna’s first paragraph.  But where are you going after your stay in Zermatt?  And WHEN are you travelling?

I would also agree with Anna’s second paragraph.  The alternative route from Lauterbrunnen to Murren is to take a the number 141 bus to Stechelberg, and then the new (very steep) cable car from Stechelberg to Murren.  Swiss Travel Passes are (of course) valid on this route as well as on the (temporarily closed) routeing via Grutschalp.
With the efficiency you would expect from the world’s best public transport system, while the Grutschalp routing is closed, the 141 buses will be running every fifteen minutes instead of the usual every thirty minutes.

    Kind regards
    Roger

    Hello again

Any journey from Zermatt to the Swiss/Italian frontier station would be within the validity area of the Swiss Travel Pass.  On the Simplon line, the validity of the STP is only as far as Domodossola.   However on the Gotthard line, (which has a MUCH better train service), the STP is valid to Chiasso, which is only FOUR kilometres (two-and-a-half miles) from Como city.  (Study a map!)

    Kind regards
    Roger

    Hi NItram,

I would follow Roger’s suggestion and travel to Lake Como via Lugano. With the Swiss Travel Pass you will benefit from free travelling up to the border Chiasso. You only need a ticket for the journey from Chiasso to Como which is less than 10 mins journey and costs roughly CHF1.50 for a single journey on the regional train.
