Train Basel-Lucerne included in Tell Pass?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a two-day trip to Lucerne and wants to purchase the Tell Pass. They are seeking advice on whether any train routes from Basel to Lucerne are covered by the Tell Pass or if they should buy a ticket to another station closer to Basel instead, aiming to save money without extending travel time.

Key takeaways:
  • The Tell Pass is only valid in the Lake Lucerne area, so you'll need a regular ticket for the train from Basel to Lucerne.
  • Consider buying a ticket to 'Reiden' if you want to use the Tell Pass for part of your journey.
  • For longer trips, the Saver Day Pass offers unlimited travel across Switzerland for a day, but may not be the best value for this route.

We are staying in Lucerne for two days and plan to purchase the Tell Pass. We will be arriving via train from Basel; are there any train routes from Basel to Lucerne that are included in that pass? Alternatively we could buy a ticket from Basel to the closest station (to Basel) included in the Tell Pass, if there was an appreciable difference in the fare vs just paying to go straight to Lucerne. I am looking to minimize costs by maximizing the use of the Tell Pass where we can, but we don’t want to add hours to our travel time to save a few dollars, either. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi FayeW and welcome to MySwissAlps.com!

Here is the validity map of the Tell Pass: http://www.myswissalps.com/tellpass/validity. The Tell Pass is valid in the Lake Lucerne area, mostly south of Lucerne. You are coming from a different way, so you cannot use your Tell Pass for your trip from Basel to Lucerne.

For longer trips we recommend the Saver Day Pass but in this case it would be more expensive, so I do not recommend it to you.

The Tell Pass is a regional pass. not a national pass, so it is limited to the Lake Luzern area.

To reach the Tell pass area you need to buy a regular ticket of some sort. Remember that in Switzerland you can buy a Saver Day Pass – this gives unlimited ‘rover’ travel across the whole of Switzerland for one day so you can go anywhere you like for a whole day, meaning that if you so choose you can go Basel – Luzern via any number of possible circular routes around Switzerland!

However Basel – Luzern itself is a fairly brisk journey so you might have to bite the bullet and pay normal point to point fare.

Provided you have the Tell Pass available when travelling from Basel to Lucerne, you could buy a ticket Basel to “Reiden”. From there, the Tell Pass is valid.
