Train Grindelwald – Wengen via Kleine Scheidegg

Short summary – read this first

Wayne is planning a trip to take the Wengenalpbahn funicular train from Grindelwald to Wengen via Kleine Scheidegg. He wants to know if he can book tickets online or buy them on the day, and he learns that the train services are currently under maintenance but will resume next December. Wayne is set to travel in the summer, so this information is helpful for his planning.

Key takeaways:
  • Tickets for the Wengenalpbahn can be purchased at the station in Grindelwald or online, but services will not be available until December.
  • Consider alternative routes like taking a cable car from Grindelwald to Mannlichen and then to Wengen for a scenic journey.
  • If using the SBB timetable, select the 'via' option to find specific routes through Kleine Scheidegg.

    Hi all.

I want to take the Wengenalpbahn funicular train across the mountains from Grindelwald to Wengen via Kleine Scheidegg. I believe they are services 64 and 65? Is that something I can book online? If so, what website? I can only find options that take me the long way around to Lauterbrunnen and up from there. Also, is this something I could just purchase on the day from the station at Grindelwald? Thanks for your feedback.

Thanks so much Anna. That explains things. Luckily I’m not going until next summer so I’m sure things will be ready by then. I appreciate your response.

A third option and the most scenic is taking the cable car from Grindelwald to Mannlichen and then the cable car from Mannlichen to Wengen.

    Hi Wayne,

Just to add. For your journey Grindelwald to Wengen (via Kleine Scheidegg). Click on settings and choose the “via” option in the SBB timetable. Here you can insert Kleine Scheidegg and this route will be displayed.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi Wayne,

To piggyback on what Mark posted, I did the exact reverse 2 months ago. I checked into my hotel in Wengen a bit after 1500 hrs. After settling in (Hotel Edelweiss), I decided to go into Grindelwald for some dinner. It was still sunny, and although somewhat late in the day, it was clear and well worth the trip into Grindelwald for dinner (see pics). I had a Swiss Travel Pass, so the cost was only CHF 29 to ride the cable car up to Mannlichen (from Wengen), take some photos, and go down to Grindelwald Terminal on the gondola. From there, it was one stop to the end of the line into Grindelwald. The scenery was spectacular. After dinner, I took the train back to Lauterbrunnen (via Zweilutschinen) and to Wengen from there via Lauretbrunnen. It was a great way to spend my first of four nights in the Jungfrau region.

There are myriad ways to go from Grindelwald to Wengen

    >>>As you found out the long way through Lauterbrunnen. (All of which is scenic.)

    >>>From G-wald to Wengen on the train via Kleine Scheidegg.

    >>>As Mark proposed (cable cars through Mannlichen).

    >>>A cable car up to Mannlichen (from Grindelwald) and hike to Kleine Scheidegg. And either hike or train to Wengen from there.Again, there are many ways to go. The best part is that either way you do go, the scenery can be beautiful. Have a great trip.

    Regards,

    Danielsan,
