Train ride Rome-Lucerne with Swiss Travel Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip from Rome to Lucerne this May with a group, intending to buy a 6-day Swiss Travel Pass. They want to confirm their train route and need to know if they can use the pass after entering Switzerland, as well as whether there's a stop in Lucerne. They're seeking clarity on these travel details.

Key takeaways:
  • You only need a train ticket from Rome to the Swiss border, as your Swiss Travel Pass is valid once you enter Switzerland.
  • Lucerne has a major train station and a reliable transport network, making it easy to reach from anywhere in Switzerland.
  • Make sure to activate your Swiss Travel Pass on the day you arrive in Switzerland for it to be valid immediately.

Hello! I will be traveling from Rome to Lucerne this May. My group plans on all purchasing a 6 day Swiss Rail Pass.I wanted to clarify the trains from Rome to Switzerland. We can get a train from Rome to the first stop in Switzerland (with the train change in Milan) and then once we are in Switzerland our rail passes will take care of the rest of the trip and we do not need to buy any further tickets. I also wanted to make sure there is a stop in Lucerne as that is where we will be staying. Sorry if this has been asked before, thank you in advance!

    Hi relsykego,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

That’s right. You can use the Swiss Travel Pass as soon as you crossed into Switzerland from Italy. So you just need a train ticket from Rome to the border. This could be Chiasso if you are travelling via Lugano or Domodossola via Brig depending on your train connections. For information about tickets from Italy to Switzerland, you can find details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/italy

Lucerne has a big train station and a good transport network. It’s fairly easy to get to from anywhere in Switzerland. You can use the SBB timetable to plan your journey.

Let us know if you need more info.

    Regards,

    Anna

If you purchase a Swiss travel pass to include the day you arrive in Switzerland, it will be valid from the moment your train crosses the Swiss border.

The Roma – Luzern route is as follows:

    Roma – Milano Centrale (Trenitalia)

Milano Centrale – Arth Goldau (Eurocity train (run jointly by Swiss /Italian train set)

Arth Goldau – Luzern (Swiss interregional train)
