Is the cost of a one way train ticket from Interlaken to Wengen CHF66 for second class and CHF83 for first class?

I was planning to stay in Wengen and taking a day trip to Brienz. Over the course of 5 days I would be traveling between Interlaken Oust and Wengen 4 times making the cost prohibitive.

    Many thanks.

Hello Bmanners1 and Welcome to MySwissAlps,

    No, a full fare 2nd Class ticket is CHF14.40. That’s a pleasant surprise I bet. 😉

1st Class is CHF20.20 but you don’t need that.

    For checking timetables see http://www.myswissalps.com/forum/topic/checking-train-timetables.

Based on your personal itinerary you should read “How to choose the best travel pass” (http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass), download the handy spreadsheet calculator and do the math. The spreadsheet also includes links to the “Where it’s valid” page for all available passes. Be sure to check those pages for each pass you are considering. Study the map AND read all the text on those pages to fully understand what is covered by the respective pass.

Have a look at the Regional Pass Bernese Oberland if most of your time is being spent there.

Thanks, Rockoyster! I knew it couldn’t be that much but I swear I saw the price somewhere.

My next question probably belongs in a different forum but I will ask here too.

i arrive in Basel on a Sunday morning and fly home from Basel on a Saturday morning in June.

My original thought was Basel to Wengen direct on the Sunday and use Wengen as a base for 5 nights to explore the mountains with one day trip to Breinz and Meiringen.

I’ve since discovered the Golden Rail Pass so am thinking of Basel to Lucerne for the day, Golden Pass to Interlaken and Wengen for 3 nights and then back on the Golden train to Montreux for 2 nights and on to Gruyères on the way to Basel.

I will have luggage so my thought was it is easier to have a base but I would see more of Switzerland if I travel by train? Any thoughts?

    Many thanks!

    Hello Bmanners1,

I actually think your plan sounds quite nice to be honest, of course including one or the other more base-change, but YES, offering you a nice variety of places, destinations and scenery.

I recommend you get familiar with the timetable to figure out details on traveling times and connections and will then have to decide if you’re fine changing bases a few times.

You could also consider “only” doing the Interlaken – Montreux leg of the Golden Pass (the REAL part of this scenic trip) and skipping Lucerne (to Interlaken).

How you map out your itinerary is really one of personal choice. There is certainly plenty to keep anyone occupied for a week in the Bernese Oberland. Personally I like to establish a base and do day trips from there. See this trip report for example. If this is your first trip to Switzerland then you may want to see more of the country.
