Train tickets Zurich, Innsbruck, Seefeld, Saas-Fee

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip from Switzerland to Austria with their son, needing advice on train tickets and rail passes for travel from September 2 to September 16. They want to know the best options for traveling between Zurich, Innsbruck, Seefeld, Salzburg, and Saas Fee, specifically if the Swiss Travel Pass is suitable for their itinerary.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider getting a Swiss Travel Pass for convenience, as it covers trains and some buses in Switzerland.
  • For travel between Austria and Switzerland, consider Eurail passes but remember they don't include buses.
  • If you're traveling less frequently, point-to-point tickets may be more economical, especially since you're booking last minute.
  • Make sure there are no baggage limits on Railjet Express trains, and look for luggage racks for larger items.

    Hi.

I have been struggling to figure out the best way to ladle train tickets for my son and I traveling between Switzerland and Austria starting next week. Could you please recommend a rail pass, if there is one that would cover both countries. Our travel is fairly simple:

    Sept 2 Zurich to Innsbruck

some travel between ‘Innsbruck & Seefeld and one possible trip Innsbruck to/from Salzburg between Sept 2-7

Sept 8 – Innsbruck to Saas Fee, which appears to most accessible Innsbruck to Visp via Zurich? then bus Visp to Saas Fee? But I would love opinions on this travel as well – best to train to Visp or another location from Innsbruck?

Sept 16 Saas Fee to Zurich – again, bus to Visp then train to. Zurich?

Thank you for any and all information you can provide!!!!

    Hi Kahughes,

Welcome to MySwissAlps! There are Eurail passes that cover one country or all of Europe. Please see http://www.myswissalps.com/eurailglobalpass for how they work (this is the one for all of Europe). The pass for Austria can be found here: https://www.eurail.com/en/eurail-passes/one-country-pass/austria.

Apart from the one for Europe, there is no Eurail pass specifically for Switzerland. But there is a Swiss Travel Pass: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpass. Note that Eurail passes do not included buses, but Swiss Travel Passes do.

The passes are convenient (no tickets to buy), but only economical if you travel a lot. Whether you travel enough to break even can be calculated as explained here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/ticketspasses/practical/chooserailpass.

If not, then point to point tickets are the way to go: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets

Saas-Fee can only be reached through Visp, where you’ll indeed switch from the train to a bus. Further train/bus schedules can be found here: http://www.myswissalps.com/timetable.

Here’s a bit more about the town: http://www.myswissalps.com/saasfee.

    Happy planning!

    Thank you so much!

Do we need to be concerned about oversized luggage on the Railjet Express trains? We will be coming with a ski bag.

    Hi kahughes,

As far as I know, there is no baggage limit on Railjet trains. Backpacks and cabin-sized luggage usually fit the overhead racks or the space behind your seats. For larger items, there are luggage racks near the carriage entrance.

On Swiss trains, you can also find overhead racks to store your luggage. You can also arrange to transport your luggage in advance for a fee. See details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/practical/luggage

    Regards,

    Anna

While planning for Austria trip I realized that rail pass is not good and I booked point to point tickets only. Since you will be buying at last minute it will be expensive
