Trainline ticket with Swiss Family Card

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Curlyfur is planning a trip to Switzerland and needs help booking train tickets for two adults and one 14-year-old child. They plan to use the Swiss Half Fare Card and Swiss Family Card but are unsure how to properly apply discounts on the Trainline app to ensure their child travels for free.

Key takeaways:
  • You only need to buy tickets for the adults; the Swiss Family Card allows your child to travel for free with valid adult tickets.
  • When using the SBB app, still only purchase tickets for the adults if you have a Swiss Family Card.
  • The child rides free for attractions like Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat as long as you have the Swiss Family Card.
  • For travel from Spiez to Domodossola, purchase adult tickets only; buy tickets for both adult and youth for the Domodossola to Milan leg.

    Hello

I am wanting to book train tickets on Trainline App. There are 2 adults and 1 child age 14. We will be purchasing the Swiss half fare card x2, and one Swiss Family Card for the child so she can travel for free.

I don’t know what discount cards to add to Trainline website so that it will reflect the correct discount. So far I added “Demi-Tarif” for me, and it seems to take 50% off. I also added that for my child, but instead of letting her travel for free with me, it is charging her half fare as well.

    Thank you

    Hi Curlyfur,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

The Swiss Family Card allows your child to travel along for free as long as you have a valid ticket. So there is no need to purchase tickets for her. You just need to buy the discounted tickets for you and your wife. You can find more details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/traintickets/switzerlandhalffare/price

During ticket inspection, just show the Swiss Family Card, the Swiss Half Fare Card and your tickets and that will be sufficient.

More info about the Swiss Family Card is available here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swissfamilycard

    Regards,

    Anna

    Anna,

Thank you so much for your reply! That was an easy solution. I spent the whole afternoon trying to figure it out! One more question: same situation, but buying tickets on the SBB app instead. It only has option to choose half fare card, not family card. Do I just go ahead and buy tickets for the adults, and not buy my daughter’s?

    Hi again,

Yes, the same applies if you’re buying tickets from the SBB app. There is no need to purchase tickets for your child if you hold a Swiss Family Card. Just purchase tickets for the adults. Be sure to choose the half-fare option to get the Swiss Half Fare discounts.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hello,

More questions (sorry). For the Jungfraujoch, Gornergrat, Matterhorn Paradise, and Pilatus tickets, does the child ride free with adult parent? I just need to buy the adult tickets?

Also, we will leave Switzerland and continue to Milan. I will buy adult tickets from Spiez to Domodossola (don’t need to buy my daughter’s), and from Domodossola to Milan buy adult and youth tickets, correct?

    Thank you,

    Chao

    Hi Curlyfur,

Yes, if your child is between 6 and 15 and you have a Swiss Family Card, then they are absolutely free. Your adult ticket will be discounted with the Swiss Half Fare Card. More information on the Swiss Family Card can be found in the link provided earlier by Anna.

That’s correct, you will need to purchase tickets from the Swiss border to Milan. More information on buying tickets to Italy from Switzerland can be found in the below link.

You can plan your route via the timetable link: https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

    I hope this clarifies.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
