Travel discounts with Eurail Global Pass

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Anna C is planning a trip to Europe later this summer and is curious about how discounts work with her Eurail Flexi Pass. She wants to know if she can use the Jungfraujoch discount on a date after using all her travel days, specifically asking if holding the pass allows for those benefits on non-travel days.

Key takeaways:
  • You cannot access discounted tickets like Jungfraujoch on non-travel days unless you have remaining travel days on your Eurail Flexi Pass.
  • Consider buying a longer Eurail pass if you want to use benefits on multiple days, especially if planning to visit popular sites.
  • The Swiss Travel Pass Flex only provides benefits on travel days, so be sure to plan accordingly.

    Hello!

Travelling to Europe later this year, and am planning on purchasing a Eurail Flexi Pass with a specific number of travel days.

To qualify for train and boat discounts, do you need to be using one of your Eurail days? Or can you qualify for the discount if you hold a pass for that time frame?

For example, if I purchase the ‘4 days in 1 month’ Eurail pass for the month of August, and use it for inter-city travel on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th of August, will I be able to use the 25% off Jungfraujoch discount on 5th August as it is still within a month of activating the pass?

    Thank you 🙂

Hi Anna C and welcome to MySwissAlps.com!

Euril Flexi Pass and Eurail Global Pass have the same validity. You can find the validity map here: http://www.myswissalps.com/eurailglobalpass/validity.

In case of the Flexi Pass: If you want to travel on any of the days in between the travel days, you will have to purchase a regular ticket. There are no discounts on such days. So in your example, you cannot use your 4 days in a month Eurail Flexi Pass on the 5th of August if you are already used all of the 4 days before (on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th of August). If you would like to use the pass to get the discount for Jungfraujoch, that counts also as a ‘travel day’, so you should choose a longer pass (ore days in 1 month) or you can get an other Swiss rail pass.

    Hi AnnaC,

The validity of the Eurail Global Pass is a bit complex for non-travel days. You can’t use the free routes on those days, but you can travel on discounted routes, and that doesn’t “cost” a travel day. Interlaken-Jungfraujoch is a discounted route. So my understanding is that you can get 25% discounted tickets for this journey on a non-travel day, even after you’ve used all of your travel days. Please see http://www.myswissalps.com/eurailglobalpass/validity and http://www.myswissalps.com/jungfraujoch/tickets. But if you want to be fully sure about this, you can best contact Eurail.com.

It’s more straightforward with the Swiss Travel Pass Flex, for example. You’ll only get pass benefits on travel days, and nothing on non-travel days (http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpassflex).
