Sam26, first – “fast and scenic” is oxymoron; you must choose what is more important for you – time or views… Second – yes, you schould take a train – it’s the best way of travel between Venice and Interlaken.

    Hi sam26,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

I agree with Kamil, generally speaking if you wish to take a faster route, you would be omitting a lot of scenery.  In comparison, if following a scenic route, this would generally take longer.

As this forum is geared towards travel in Switzerland, for the Italy section (Venice to the Swiss border) you may need to find other resources for feedback.

So the Swiss side of things. Once you enter Switzerland from Italy, it’s likely the entry points would be Chiasso or Domodossola.  I would suggest the following for a scenic ride to reach Interlaken:

    • From Domodossola you could follow the Lötschberg Mountain Railway route to Spiez, change and then onwards to Interlaken
    • Take a train to Lugano, thereon take the Gotthard Panorama Express to Lucerne, then the GoldenPass line to Interlaken

In addition, you could take a train to Locarno, then take the Centovalli Railway to Domodossola, then connect up with the Lötschberg Mountain Railway mentioned above.

More information on the above mentioned suggestions here:

We also have a handy guide on travel to/from Italy to Switzerland.  Here it is:

The Swiss train system is efficient and straightforward.  You can read all about “how it works” in the attached link:

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda
