    Good day,

We are a party of 4 traveling with the Swiss Travel Pass. Can someone please advise if this is the best routing for Zermatt to Bellagio?

    • Zermatt to Brig (covered on Swiss travel pass)
    • Brig to Milan (not covered)
    • Milan to Varenna (not covered)

Is there a better route that may utilize our Swiss travel pass better? Many thanks!

    Hi Gardenglobe,

Thanks for joining MySwissAlps! The quickest and easiest route will be displayed by default if you consult the timetable and enter Varenna-Esino as your destination. It indeed runs via Brig, Domodossola and Milan.

The Swiss Travel Pass coverage can be checked by downloading the validity map and zooming in on the route you have in mind. As you’ll see, Zermatt-Brig and Brig-Domodossola are covered. From Domodossola onward, you need an additional full fare ticket to Varenna. Information on train tickets to Italy can be found here.

There is an alternative, that’s very scenic and will result in less additional travel costs as the remaining Italian leg is shorter and cheaper. However, it’s quite long and complicated as well: Zermatt-Brig-Domodossola-Locarno (using the beautiful local Centovalli train)-Chiasso-Como-Varenna. Entering ‘Locarno’ as a via-station in the timetable allows you to find details on these connections. The entire leg as far as Chiasso would be covered by the Swiss Travel Pass, so in that case you’d only need an additional ticket Chiasso-Varenna.

How much time have you got and where have you been already.

you could follow the glacier express route and stop overnight between Chur and St moritz then bernina express route to Tirano where you pick up a train to varenna. If you have time and pay supplements for Glacier/Bernina express (33/14chf) then very worthwhile
