Zurich to St Moritz to Tirano on Bernina Express

Short summary – read this first

Sam is planning a trip from Zurich to St. Moritz with a few nights' stay before heading to Milan. They want to know if the Bernina Express is the best scenic option during mid-February and if they can break their journey in St. Moritz. They are also looking for train times to ensure they can make the trip in one day from Zurich Airport.

Key takeaways:
  • The Bernina Express runs year-round, so you can definitely take it in February, but make sure to reserve your seats for both sections.
  • For a faster trip from Zurich Airport to St. Moritz, consider the regional trains, which take about 3.5 hours.
  • If you're splitting the journey, using regional trains instead of the Bernina Express can save you money on reservation fees.

    Hi,

I will be flying to Zurich 15 Feb 2019 and want to go to St Moritz for a few nights and then on to Milan.

Can I get the Bernia Express at that time for year, is that the best way to go for a scenic travel?

Can I get off in St Moritz and back on a few days later to continue to Tirano?

What times are the trains, can this be done in one day to get from Zurich Airport, arriving early to St Moritz?

    Thanks for your help!

    Sam

    Hi Sam,

Yes, the Bernina Express operates throughout the year, although the timetable past December 8, 2018 isn’t released yet. You can always travel the same route on a regional train as well depending on how your exact schedule looks.

If you take the Bernina Express in two parts (breaking it at St. Moritz for a couple days) you’ll need to make reservations for both trips.

You can read more about the Bernina Express trip here: http://www.myswissalps.com/be rninaexpress

If you take the quickest route option from the airport to St. Moritz (without worrying about connecting on the Bernina Express) it will take about 3.5 hours: http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

The most direct way to be on a scenic train is to connect on the Glacier Express (http://www.myswissalps.com/gl acierexpress) from Chur to St. Mortiz (but any other train on this leg is fine as well) and then the Bernina Express from St Moritz to Tirano a few days later.

Typically they are released around the 2nd or 3rd week of October.

Schedules won’t change much from what they are now though. It is more of a fine tuning each year. Most major changes happen within city transit I found. I always got thrown in Zurich on Dec.9 when they rename train lines or change the stations they go to! Takes me a week or so to remember again what goes where. 🙂

It’s easy to get from Zurich Airport to Chur (main line standard gauge Federal railways) to connect into a train (metre gauge Rhätische Bahn (RhB)) to St Moritz

There is a very similar query elsewhere on this forum, and here is my same answer:

If you are splitting the journey there is no need to use the Bernina Express – you will save unnecessary reservation fees).

Especially don’t use the Bernina Express for just a Chur – St Moritz journey. This is the Albula route. Just take the regular IR trains (every hour) they leave Chur at xx.58 past each hour
