Hi! We are traveling from Lucerne to Amsterdam this October but wanted to travel during the day so we can see the country side. Or is it better if we catch the train from Zurich HB to Amsterdam? What train should we take and how many train/trains going outbound to Amsterdam? And what should we expect in regardings to changing trains? Is it complicated? Your advise is greatly appreciated.

    Hi Lcruel6,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

Yes it’s possible to take a train from Lucerne to Amsterdam. You can use the SBB timetable to find a suitable connection. I did a quick check and there’s a connection which requires only 2 train changes. The train leaves Lucerne at 08.54 and arrives in Amsterdam at 17.53, with two changes in Basel and Frankfurt.

To get north from Switzerland to northern Europe ie towards Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands etc, the normal route is always via Basel, main station called Basel SBB. (Basel SBB Is where German trains arrive to meet Swiss trains).

Luzern – Basel is a frequent service of Intercity and inter regional trains, so the aim is always to get a train to Basel first, then think about which train to take north.

There are several connections a day with 2 changes of train (the change point varies depending on the connection, for example on one journey you change at Cologne, on some others you connect at Frankfurt am Main

The best railway planner is the German railway site (it was the first ever such site):
