Interlaken to Chur to catch Bernina Express

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named NipuN has a reservation for the Bernina Express from Chur to Tirano on June 7th and is trying to figure out how to get from Interlaken to Chur in time for the train's departure at 08:32 AM. Since direct trains don’t work, they seek advice on the best travel plan to reach Chur on time.

Key takeaways:
  • It's better to stay overnight in Chur to ensure you catch the Bernina Express on time.
  • Traveling directly from Interlaken to Chur in the morning is risky due to the distance and tight connections.
  • Consider departing from Zurich instead, as it offers a more feasible schedule to reach Chur early enough.

    Hello,

I have reservation for Bernia Express from Chur to Tirano, with below details:

    Train number: 951

    Date of travel: 07/06/2019

Time of departure from Chur: 08:32AM

I would be staying in Interlaken and would like to start my journey from Interlaken to Chur in the early morning.

But i couldn’t find a connection train from Interlaken by which i can reach Chur before Bernia Express departs.

Can anyone please advice on how can I get on time in Chur for the Bernia Express?

    Hi NipuN,

Welcome to MySwissAlps! Interlaken is too far away from Chur to be a starting point for this day. You’d better travel the prior evening and book a hotel in Chur. Theoretically you could book a taxi from Interlaken but that will cost hundreds of Swiss francs (more than a hotel room).

You can do it with a 04.58 start from Interlaken but it would be a very hard day and it would be risky with short connecting times. In the case of Zürich the connecting time would be shorter than the official minimum connecting time so it is far too risky to be viable – sorry. You need to look at the maps and you will see that it is half way across Switzerland – over 200km and because both towns are in the high Alps, there is no direct route so the shortest journey is about 3.5 hours.

You will probably need to fundamentally alter your plans.

Please bear in mind that you do not have to use the Bernina Express to travel Chur – Tirano. It can be achieved at other times of day by the normal trains on the same lines

Thank you very much for the advice..

Already re-planned my trip to accommodate Bernia Express experience!

I would be staying in Zurich previous night and planning to leave early morning from Zurich –> Chur for boarding Bernia Express.

    Hi NipuN,

Sounds like a good plan. From Zurich it’s still early but doable. The 4:58 train from Interlaken Ost would get you in Chur at 8:43 from what I can see, which is too late.

You’ll be traveling on the Bernina Express which crosses the Bernina pass (not Bernia) 🙂

    Have fun!
