Upgrade City Luzern option on train ticket?

Short summary – read this first

Marilyn is planning a trip to Luzern and checking fares to determine the best travel pass for her needs. She is curious about an 8 CHF upgrade option for urban transport in Luzern. She's looking for help to understand the benefits of this upgrade in relation to her travel plans.

Key takeaways:
  • The 8 CHF upgrade option is mainly for travelers without a pass who need urban transport on a regular ticket
  • When comparing ticket prices to a pass, focus on the basic full ticket prices without any additional options
  • Consider getting a Swiss Travel Pass if you plan to do a lot of traveling by train and bus in Switzerland.

    Hello!

I have been browsing fares to determine which pass would be most appropriate for us. There is an option for 8 CHF to “upgrade city Luzern” and I’m curious about the benefit. Any help will be appreciated!

    Hi Marilyn,

It sounds like an upgrade on a regular ticket to Luzern to include urban transport in the city that day. But I am not sure as you mentioned you’re looking into a pass rather than a ticket. Which pass do you mean?

Actually, I was on SBB and checking fares from Luzern to Lauterbrunnen. There is an option to “upgrade” for an additional 8 CHF before checking out. I wasn’t actually going to purchase the ticket today, just clicking on the pass options to make comparisons.

Ok, I see, thanks. In that case you can ignore that option. It’s for people without a pass who purchase a point to point ticket for the train, and also need to use a bus, for example, within the city of Luzern. To compare regular ticket prices to a pass you need the basic full (not half fare) ticket prices without any additional options. The compare process is explained here, but you may have found that page already: http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/ticketspasses/prac tical/chooserailpass.
