Use Swiss Travel Pass Flex day for discount only?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Mikedee81 is planning a 19-day trip to Switzerland at the end of February and wants advice on using the Swiss Travel Pass Flex. They are specifically asking if using a cable car to Klein Matterhorn on a different day from when they activate their pass counts as a travel day. Their query focuses on how to maximize their pass days while still enjoying discounts.

Key takeaways:
  • You can choose your travel days with the Swiss Travel Pass Flex, but you must activate it on days you plan to use it, even if you don’t travel that day.
  • There's no need to buy cable car tickets for the Klein Matterhorn in advance; simply show your pass on the day you use it.
  • Plan your trips carefully on travel days to maximize discounts on mountain excursions and avoid full fare charges.

Hi guys, I am visiting at the end of Feb for 19 days. I think getting the Flexi pass to cover 15 in. a month is the right option for me but the question I would like to ask is this. Let’s say as an example I wanted to go to Klein Matterhorn via the CC. I would get 50% off that as you know with the Flexi but would that mean using one of my days if I had already booked it on a different day? As in, if the day before I activated my ticket and was using the train somewhere else and then booked the Cable car for the day later would I need to activate it again on the day I used the CC? Do I have to activate it on the days I have purchased tickets for despite not using it, technically, for that day? I hope you understand what I am trying to ask haha. Thank you. I have read so much great info for my upcoming/last minute trip Via this Forum.

    Hi Mikedee81,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

You’ll find information about how to use the Swiss Travel Pass Flex here: http://www.myswissalps.com/swisstravelpassflex/howtouse

So basically, you’re free to choose your travel days. On these valid travel days you can travel as much as you like and take advantage of the discounts on mountain railways and cable cars and even free museum visits. If you are travelling on a non-travel day, the pass provides no free rides or discounts. You should plan ahead and make sure to do a trip to Kleine Scheidegg on a chosen travel day to avoid paying the full fare.

I hope this answers your question.

    Regards,

    Anna

Sorry, but you can’t use any version of the Swiss Travel Pass as a means of getting tickets for travelling on a day which you have not elected to be one of your ‘using the pass’ days

so in response to your statement: “Do I have to activate it on the days I have purchased tickets for despite not using it, technically, for that day? “

Yes, you do have to activate it because you are ‘using it’ I’m afraid

There is no need to purchase cable car tickets ahead of time for the Klein Matterhorn. You just walk up; show your pass (if you are using it as one of your days); pay the discounted fare and get on. I never buy tickets for mountain excursions ahead of the day, due to the possibility of cloudy or inclement weather. Every day you use you pass for travel or discounted tickets it counts as one of your Flex Pass days. Have you thoughts about the Half Fare Card? After comparing it with the Swiss Travel Pass and the Flex Pass it always worked out best for us. There is a great excel spread sheet offered here on MySwissAlps to make that comparison. We would usually travel for 3-4 weeks with 7-10 days in Zermatt. Have a wonderful trip.

I have looked at the half price ticket but the flexi seems much better for me. Yes thats exactly what I intend to do especially given this time of year but just wondered if I was trying to cut a day or too whether this was even feasible. Which it isnt. All good.

    Thank you all.
