Using Saver Day Pass for panoramic trains

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named JamieC is planning to book tickets for the Glacier Express and Bernina Express but is confused about the Saver Day Pass and payment issues on the SBB website. They need advice on how to apply the Saver Day Pass for both trains and are struggling with payment processing with their credit cards.

Key takeaways:
  • Purchase the Saver Day Pass directly from SBB, as it is valid on both Glacier Express and Bernina Express for public transport in Switzerland.
  • When making seat reservations, select 'No Tickets' discount option if using the Saver Day Pass.
  • Contact your bank if you're having payment issues on SBB, as foreign credit card transactions can sometimes be blocked.

I’m trying to book tickets for Glacier Express and Bernina Express. However, I don’t see “Saver Day Pass” on the discount options. Glacier Express doesn’t list anything close to it, while Bernina Express has “One Day Travel Pass”.

    1. How can I apply Saver Day Pass to Glacier Express? (from Brig to Chur, one way)

    2. How can I apply Saver Day Pass to Bernina Express? Should I select One Day Travel Pass?

    3. Side question: I’m having hard time making payments on SBB.ch. I’ve tried three different credit cards and each time it says there’s been an error while processing the query (when I click “Submit” for the payment). Do you have any advice?

It’s great that there are different kinds of passes and discounts, but it surely feels complicated and confusing to navigate for a newbie like myself… Your advice would be greatly appreciated!!

    Hi JamieC,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps!

You can purchase the Saver Day Pass online from here: http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass/price

It is valid on both the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express but you would still need to make seat reservations before you travel. Seat reservations for:

I am not sure why you are having difficulties making payment to SBB. I think the best thing to do is to contact them personally as the problem could be technical or related to your credit cards.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi Anna,

Thank you so much for the response. My questions were actually about how to apply the Saver Day Pass when I’m making purchases on GE and BE. After making seat reservations, I have to choose DIscount(pass) options. I do not see Saver Day Pass on either websites (GE and BE). On BE, I see “One Day Travel Pass” that might be a fit for Saver Day Pass. On GE, I don’t see anything close to what might be a fit for Saver Day Pass… Do you know what kind of pass I should select in order to check out the seat reservations with Saver Day Pass?

    Hi Jamie C,

The One Day Travel Pass is not the same as the Saver Day Pass. In most cases the one day travelpass is usually more expensive. The Saver Day Pass on the other hand, the sooner you buy it the cheaper it is. And it’s even cheaper if you have the Swiss Half Fare Card (http://www.myswissalps.com/swisshalffarecard).

You don’t have to buy the Saver Day Pass from the Glacier Express or Bernina Express sites to use them on these trains. The Saver Day Pass is valid for travel on public transport anywhere in Switzerland for one day up to 5am. This means you can use it also on the panoramic trains.

For more information, please read the details on this page: http://www.myswissalps.com/saverdaypass

I would recommend buying the Saver Day Passes direct from SBB. Please use the link I have provided in the previous post. For seat reservations on the panoramic trains, please book separately on the respective websites.

    Regards,

    Anna

Hi JamieC! Unfortunately payment problems with foreign credit cards are a well-known problem on the domestic SBB website. For most products you’d better pick another retailer, such as the SBB tourist webshop Switzerland Travel Centre: https://shop.switzerlandtravelcentre.com.

Glacier Express/Bernina Express reservations aren’t available there, but you can pick another retailer, listed at the pages provided by Anna. Here are the direct purchase links:

If you get your reservations there, you don’t have to pick any discount pass. You’ll just get reservations, that’s all. Then your Saver Day Pass will cover for the ride itself. You don’t have to have your Saver Day Pass before arranging for seat reservations. As long as you have both your reservations and a valid ticket/pass (such as the Saver Day Pass) when boarding the train, you’re all set! This may be useful too: http://www.myswissalps.com/train/reservations/howtouse.

The 1-day Travelpass can only be used in conjunction with the Swiss Half Fare Card: http://www.myswissalps.com/onedaytravelpass.

    Hi jackie,

I too had same doubt while reserving seats in burning express.

I asked with Rhb executives via email and they recommended for two ways:

    1. One case use “GA travelcard ” discount option from dropdown menu if you are owning a savers day pass.

    Or

    2. Just reserve the tickets using “no tickets” discount option from drop down menu. Carry both reservation printout and savers day pass on board(i asked for burning express only).

Thank you everyone! I was able to resolve all the problems with your advices! I also got a response from GE about the question and was advised to choose the “Swiss Travel Pass (-Flexi, etc)” for Saver Day Pass. I chose “No Tickets” for BE as advised on this forum 🙂

I purchased the Saver Day Passes for the respective dates and made seal reservations for both GE and BE!

It feels soooo good to have these resolved and get done thanks to all of your quick, kind, and informative responses. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

p.s. for the payment issue, I called my bank and spoke to the Fraud dept and then Security dept and was able to clear it with VISA. Apparently VISA had blocked these transactions for security purpose. Thank you once again for all the help!
