VIP grand view seats on GoldenPass Express

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip from Luzern to Montreux on 12 September and is confused about reserving dome view seats on the GoldenPass Express train. They specifically want to know where to find and book these seats, as they are currently only finding options for Prestige Class which seems standard.

Key takeaways:
  • Dome view VIP seats are not guaranteed on the new GoldenPass Express and cannot be reserved in advance; they are available only on certain trains between Zweisimmen and Montreux.
  • Check the official website or local travel resources for the latest updates on train formations and seat availability.
  • If you find a train with VIP seats, you can purchase tickets on-board if they are available.

I have read about dome view seats on the GoldenPass Express train, but I am unable to find where to reserve these seats. I am traveling from Luzern to Montreux on 12 September of this year. Any information would be helpful. I can find Prestige Class but that looks like regular 1st class 2 and 1 seating.

The Golden Pass can be a confusing brand, due to the different technical features of the lines that the services traverse.

It’s complicated to explain but here are the basic facts:

    • The original Golden Pass route is Montreux – Gstaad – Zweisimmen, run for over 100 years by the MOB railway company, which invented panoramic trains in Switzerland. Zweiseimmen – Interlaken is a main line railway operated by BLS.
    • Until this year, you always had to change trains at Zweisimmen because of the different track gauge, even though the service was branded as Golden Pass throughout.
    • Since 1976, MOB operated narrow gauge Panoramic Express trains Montreux – Zweisimmen
    • From this year a new train with movable axles runs direct from Montreux to Interlaken. This is the GoldenPass Express
    • The ‘VIP’ seats are a feature of some of the old Panoramic Express train vehicles, but they do not feature in the new GoldenPass Express train sets

Yes I agree very confusing. I am beginning to think that the Grand view VIP seats are only available between Zweisimmen and Montreux but still cannot seem to find where to reserve those seats. Any suggestions?

The subject of the VIP seats cars has been discussed in many threads over the last few years. Because MOB is constantly changing the formation of its train sets, the VIP cars no longer run at guaranteed times, so you cannot reserve in advance. If the train happens to feature one of these cars (there are only 4 in total) you can buy on the train.

    Hi T Tait,

I think you might be referring to the Golden Pass VIP seats on the Panoramic trains between Zweisimmen and Montreux. These are very limited and not available on all panorama trains. You can find details on the VIP seats, and links to booking options, at http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/tickets.

You can find further information on the Golden Pass experience here: http://www.myswissalps.com/goldenpass/gettingthere. All trains are explained there.

    regards,

    Anna
