GoldenPass VIP seats Montreux to Gstaad: can I reserve seats?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip from Montreux to Gstaad, departing at 7:50 am in March, and is seeking advice on booking VIP seats on the train and seating arrangements. They have a Saver Day Pass and are also asking for recommendations on activities to do during their 5-hour stay in Gstaad before continuing to Interlaken.

Key takeaways:
  • You cannot book the VIP seats online; they can only be reserved in person at the station.
  • Seat reservations are generally not needed for first-class travel unless you are in Prestige Class.
  • For scenic views on the Montreux to Gstaad segment, sit on the right side of the train.
  • In Gstaad, consider walking the Gstaad – Ebnit – Saanen trail for a quick outdoor experience.

We intend to travel from Montreux to Gstaad early morning in March at 7:50am and I have a few questions and you can assist for our travel planning on the day

    1. I am wondering if we can book the front VIP seats online as I cannot seem to book it online? (like in the attached photo)
I remember a few years ago, you can book it but when I went there again, the front beautiful seats seems to be blocked (see the screenshot in RED box for the seating plane) and it is also blocked for all other dates too as I checked. Any idea? I guess rules have changed? Or this is only available to reserve when you hop on the train etc?  PS: I have Saver Day Pass (first class)
    2. We intend to travel from Gstaad to Interlaken via Goldenpass express train (the new one) @ 2pm and if we sit in first class, it is not compulsory to reserve a seat and we can sit anywhere we want provided it has not been reserved by others, right? This segment, even it is full, we do not mind even sitting in 2nd class because the most important is after it ends the tration in Interlaken at 3:57pm, for the same train, we will take the 4:08pm Goldenpass express train all the way to Montreux in “prestige class” and this alone cost 20CHF (seat reservation) +29CHF  (prestige class additional reservation), so we want to make the most of it!
    3. From Montreux to Gstaad segment, which side do you recommend to sit for good view?
    4. From Interlaken to Montreux which side?

    Thank you in advance =)

    Hi TravelGuy,

That’s great you’ll be traveling on the GoldenPass route in March.  In case you’ve not purchased your 1st class Saver Day Pass, you can find some purchase options here:

    In answer to your questions:

    1. These seats are limited and not guaranteed, hence they can not be reserved in advance.  If your train just so happens to have them, you can book them when you board. Perhaps enquire at the station on the day of travel?
    2. Correct, generally seat reservations are not necessary unless you are traveling Prestige Class, then a seat reservation is required here.
    3. For 3 &4, scroll to “At which side of the trains to sit” in the attached link:  https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/goldenpass/

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

Thank you very much for the suggestion and answers as they are very helpful for us!

Given we have about 5 hours of stay in Gstaad from around 9:30am to 2pm before we board the next train to Interlaken, what do you recommend us to do other than strolling in the town of Gstaad and the small town of Saanen?

As we want to go to Glacier 3000 but the time seem to be rush as it requires at least several hours to play, relax etc, so we will leave this for next time

We have our Prestige seats reserved for our October journey from Interlaken to Montreux.

As for the side, if you want the seats for a couple opposite each other there is no choice, for our day they are on the right side of the train, and the groups of four on the other side.

We aren’t travelling until October as I said, and there appear to only be four seats left in the entire Prestige carriage, so book soon.

    Hi TravelGuy,

If you are not visiting the Glacier 3000 (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/glacier-3000/), there are yes, other activities in the area that you could do.

I am unsure what your interests are but if you like walking, there are a few trails that are accessible and lead from village to village. Gstaad – Ebnit – Saanen is one, taking under an hour.  Or you could take the bus to Lauensee lake and enjoy a walk around the lake and soak in the scenery.

If you enjoy biking, similarly, you could rent a bike and explore some the trails in the area.  Alternatively, if you are a fan of wellness, how about visiting a spa?  Additional Gstaad information here:  https://www.myswissalps.com/town/gstaad/

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Thanks for the reply Yolanda

The Gstaad – Ebnit – Saanen walk seems a good idea to soak the atmosphere as we intended to take a bus to Saanen, so we might take the return bus back to Saanen

Since you said there are few trails, which route is the one that has white snow, white mountain view during winter as we are going in 8th March?

    Thanks

    Hi TravelGuy,

Unfortunately it is currently not possible to reserve the GoldenPass VIP seats online. You have to do it in person at the station. You can find further details here: https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/goldenpass/ (go to the prices and tickets section, where all info about seat reservations is provided).

Regarding the hiking trails in Gstaad, you can check the snow condition if any from the livecam. You can find the link under other websites of interest from the Gstaad destination page (Yolanda has the link above).

    Regards,

    Anna
