Hot spotting using my eSim and VPN use whilst in Switzerland

Short summary – read this first

Queenie is planning to travel on the panoramic trains in Switzerland and wants to know if she can use an eSIM like Sunrise to hotspot her phone to her iPad for streaming shows while on the long journey. She's concerned about the duration of eight hours on the train and needs advice on the best way to watch her favorite programs during the trip.

Key takeaways:
  • Check if your chosen eSIM supports hotspotting before purchasing.
  • For the Glacier Express, there's free WiFi available, so connect your iPad directly to it.
  • Download your shows or movies before the trip to watch offline, as streaming can consume a lot of data and battery.
  • Always bring a power bank to charge your devices while traveling.

I  have a technical question.  I am thinking of downloading NordVPN to watch  favourite programs. if I purchase an E Sim, e.g. sunrise, will I be able to hotspot my phone to my iPad and watch programs while travelling on the panoramic trains. I know there will be fabulous scenery to enjoy however eight hours is a long time on a train.

    Hi Queenie,

I am pretty sure this can be achieved, though some streaming sites are starting to detect to VPN and blocking.  (I am not technically minded on the complete ins and outs but it’s what I have read).

eSim information can be found in the attached link, with some suggested purchase options:

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi Queenie,

If this is about the Glacier Express: there’s free WiFi on board. You should be able to connect your tablet to this network directly. See “What 1st and 2nd class on board the Glacier Express are like” at https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/glacier-express/.

Not all eSIMs allow hotspotting as far as I know. The page Yolanda mentioned highlights a few that do.

Queenie, I replied to another post of yours about the number of gb you might require.  I’ll repeat it here, in case you don’t see the other post.

I don’t do it as I am not a movie watcher, but my husband downloads a selection of movies and shows to his iPad and watches them in bed at night while I read.  They also come in useful on the flight if his entertainment unit doesn’t work which has happened before.  With a 24 hour journey ahead of him, that is like killing bambi!

If you don’t know how to do it let me know.  I don’t know either but my husband can tell me.  I know you can do it with Netflix from Australia and I think with Binge and no doubt others too.   I do know that the downloads aren’t permanent though, I think they last a month or so.

Let me know if you want more information.

    Hi Queenie,

I agree with DebH. If you would like to watch your tv shows or films on streaming platforms on your ipad or phone whilst on the train, it’s best to download them in advance so you can watch them offline (even without wifi connection). Make sure you bring along your power banks because these tend to drain the battery quickly.

    Regards,

    Anna
