Walk from old town hotel to train station Lucerne

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip on the Gotthard Panorama Express from Lugano to Lucerne, followed by a steamboat ride across Lake Lucerne. They need advice on the distance from the boat dock to Lucerne's Old Town and whether the train station is conveniently located for their onward journey to Zurich Airport.

Key takeaways:
  • The Old Town, train station, and boat docks in Lucerne are all within walking distance, making it easy to explore.
  • The Hotel Continental Park is highly recommended for its proximity to the train station and a short walk to the Old Town.
  • Consider using Google Maps for navigation and travel times to get around Lucerne efficiently.
  • Travelers often find the Swiss Half Fare Card beneficial for reduced fares on trains and boats during their trip.

I am planning on taking the Gotthard Panorama Express from Lugano to Lucerne. I understand in Fluelen I will then board a steamboat to cross Lake Lucerne.

    1. When the boat docks in Lucerne, how far is it to Old Town which is where I would like to reserve a hotel room? Is it within walking distance or would I take a taxi?

    2. Upon leaving Lucerne I plan on taking the train to Zurich Airport————-is the train station in Lucerne right in town?

    Thanks

    Hello Sparkyenos,

All three things, the old town, the train station and the docks at the Lake Lucerne are within walking distance. Lucerne has 80’000 inhabitants and the center is right around the lake bassin.

I’m sure google maps will help for an overview and so will this link:

    Central Hotel Lucerne!

Nice quality hotel,…not too expensive….a few minutes walk to train station and lake.

Thanks for hotel recommendation. I’m glad this trip is not until next year———–so many questions to ask——–I think I decided on the Swiss Half Fare Card———-definitely a work in progress

It is a 1 minute walk from the train station…..a 5-10 minute walk across the river to the Old Town (or a quicker tram ride)….and a 10-15 minute tram ride to the boat dock.

Hotel Continental Park is in a similar location to the Hotel Central Luzern.

If you walk across the bridge, you get hotels that are more (or much more) expensive. Some consider that worthwhile. Others don’t think it is worth the cost. Here is a view from one of them.

The picture is a WOW. I am more interested in being close to the boat docking area since we will have our luggage———–we can walk across the bridge once we check in

    thanks

Google maps will give you a good idea of how long it takes to get from A to B by various forms of transport. I can recommend the Hotel Continental Park. Their front door is 50 metres from the side entrance of Luzern Station which is adjacent to the docks.

It’s about 15 minutes walk over the iconic Chapel Bridge to the Old Town.

Look at http://www.booking.com – you can see a map view which shows hotels in relation to the station/docks.
