Hi, I’m planning to spend 3 nights in wengen/murren and I’m wondering how bad is the weather risk?

Does the spring start in mid april (lush green fields, blooming flowers) or I should keep my expectations to the lower side and villages will have lots of snow?

I am fascinated with those lush green photos but have seen few comments about weather so worried that weather may jinx the trip.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks

Hello Nedojefoc and welcome to MySwissAlps

Spring is just starting at low altitudes but it will be very much winter still in the higher altitudes. The snow will most likely have left Interlaken but with global warming who can say.

There is plenty of information at http://www.myswissalps.com/ab outswitzerland/nature.

I’ve been in Wengen and places of a similar altitude in April and the snow is usually gone by then, but you don’t get ‘lush green fields’ until late spring and summer. In April, the grass will be brown as it has only just lost its covering of snow.

    Hi Nedojefec –

    Rockoyster and 1960man nailed it.

Here is a panorama taken at low altitude, about 700 meters, on approximately April 16th , in 2014. Attached.

Plenty of snow on the Alps.

You will note that the fields have only begun to become green at the very lowest altitudes. Trees are just beginning to blossom. Your monitor make make the image greener than it actually is. Except for the lowest levels, the fields are more grey than green.

That was during an unusually warm and sunny dry spell throughout all of Switzerland. I’d expect what you see in this image to occur normally in early to mid-May.

That said, in especially sunny areas, facing west, Spring can be far advanced in mid-April. Examples are Montreux, the Cote Lavaux, and Weggis. None have expansive fields to be green. For green fields…May, in the regions that tourists don’t normally visit.

And, on my tablet, they all look a lot greener than my correctly colored images.
