Weather in June in the Jungfrau region

Short summary – read this first

Marilyn is planning a hiking trip in the Swiss Jungfrau region from mid to late June and is concerned about the weather conditions. She is looking for advice on potential rain or snow and how to best prepare for her moderate hiking route. Any insights on trails and weather would be greatly appreciated.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider starting your trip in the Ticino region for milder weather, then transition to the Jungfrau later.
  • Use layered clothing and be prepared for changing weather conditions when hiking in the Jungfrau.
  • Bring essential gear like a high-quality poncho and hiking poles for added comfort.
  • Staying in Wengen is recommended for a car-free, accessible base with great views and transport options.
  • Look into longer stays for discounts on cable car passes in the Jungfrau region.

I am enjoying and appreciating this site as I dream about our upcoming hiking trip in Switzerland in June of 2022. I have read the weather section for the Jungfrau and Ticino regions; our preference is to go to the Jungfrau region, but the weather in the Ticino region looks better. We can start our hiking around 15 June, and need to finish by 25 June. In addition to cool temperatures are we likely to find daily or continuous rain or even snow? We are moderate hikers and will not be climbing high peaks. I realize it is the mountains and we should be prepared for anything.

I will be most grateful for any insights that will help us plan. Thank you! Marilyn

I would spend the first half of your trip hiking in the Ticino region and then spend the second half in the Jungfrau. The weather will be mild in the Ticino region then. It has been pleasant in the Jungfrau when I’ve been there toward the end of June, but of course you’d want to travel with clothing to layer in case you take any of the high elevation excursions such as the Jungfraujoch, Schilthorn, etc.

    Hi Marilyn,

    Welcome to MySwissAlps.

The hiking season in the Jungfrau region usually starts around mid-June. But there are various trails at lower elevation that are accessible much earlier than this. Some suggestions below:

    Hope this helps.

We have traveled to Wengen , the Jungfrau region, many times in June to hike. We only rarely had any snow on the lower trails which are quite easy and do not demand any special equipment but a nice hiking pole and low cut walking waterproof shoes. It rains sometimes so buy a really good poncho that will cover you and a daypack. Bring an umbrella. We have always had most of our days dry in June with a few rain showers.

If you have not made arrangements for your hotels consider staying Wengen at the Hotel Alpenrose, family run, three star, great food, friendly hotel dog, and on demand taxi service to the train and Mannlichen cable car. If you have time, Zermatt is nice too during that time. One hint you save money on the cable car hiking pass for the Jungfrau region if you stay longer. We stay usually 6 to 8 days and never have to repeat a trail. In Zermatt we stay at the Hotel Julen , expensive but great spa and swimming pool and romantic rooms.

I also suggest you stay in one spot in Jungfrau. For many years we would stay at Grindelwald and then stay at Wengen , Stay at Wengen, its is car free and great views, Grindelwald is busy with a lot of shopping and great views but busy ,busy, busy. You can get anywhere fast from Wengen by cable car or train. You can drive to it in 2 hours from Zurich or fast by train. Enjoy your trip. We felt Jungfrau was the greatest place to hike for cable car hikers like ourselves who walk without equipment in a down hill path ending at a great restaurant.
