Weather/packing for Switzerland, September-October
A traveler named Jrzgrl is heading to Lauterbrunnen and Zermatt at the end of September for mountain visits, including Jungfrau and Matterhorn. They’re unsure about what to pack due to limited space in carry-on luggage and ask for advice on layering versus heavy winter clothing for their non-adventurous six-week trip, which continues in Austria, Germany, and Italy.
Layering is key for mountain excursions in September and October; pack a light waterproof jacket and a warm headband with gloves for added warmth. Consider wearing a compact windproof jacket like the Patagonia Nano Puff, and check if airlines allow you to carry a coat onboard to save luggage space. For footwear, opt for versatile shoes like Merrell Moabs instead of ventilated running shoes for comfort during valley walks.

We will be traveling at the end of September to Lauterbrunnen and Zermatt. We are planning to visit a few of the mountains (Jungfrau, Shillthorn, Matterhorn as a start). I’m struggling with what I should pack. The remainder of our trip will be in Austria, Germany and Italy which will be mild. Do I need a winter coat, hat, gloves or can I layer for the trips up and back? We are not adventurous hikers so we would probably limit our walks to between the villages. We are staying a total of six weeks and only using carry-on, so space is limited. Thank you!
