    Hello all you helpful members!

I think the best way to get from Wengen to Grindelwald is by taking the gondola from Wengen and transferring at Männlichen to Grindelwald Terminal.  Will it be $29.00 from Wengen to Mannlichen and then $34.00 from Mannlichen to Grindlewald round trip? We will have the STP.   I am trying to understand the extra costs that are not covered under the STP.  Or is there a better option for getting from Wengen to Grindelwald?

    Thank you!

    Hi Dorrie,

With a Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/) , you will get a 50% discount on the cable car from Wengen to Männlichen (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/mannlichen/) and the gondola from Männlichen to Grindelwald Terminal.

You can also travel free from Wengen to Grindelwald with the Swiss Travel Pass by getting the train from Wengen to Grindelwald with transfers at Lauterbrunnen and Zweilütschinen.

There’s not much difference in travel time between the two options, but I think the cable car / gondola option is more fun and more scenic!

Another option is to go via Kleine Scheidegg, i.e. train from Wengen to Kleine Scheidegg, then transfer to the train from Kleine Scheidegg to Grindelwald.  This is a very scenic option, but you only get a 25% discount on this route with the Swiss Travel Pass.

    Hope this clarifies things!

    Hi Dorrie,

In addition to Alpenrose’s helpful reply, our handy guide explains all in regard to mountain transportation with a Swiss Travel Pass.  You can read our summaries of Swiss Travel Pass inclusions and where tickets are necessary (though discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass).  If you want to, you can also download the coverage map which also displays the necessary.  In case you need on-line purchase options for the pass, you find some too.

    Here’s the guide:

Plan and research your journeys with the Swiss timetable:  https://www.myswissalps.com/travel/public-transport/timetable/

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

Is it necessary to purchase the tickets with the STP discount on the Wengenalp train from Grindelwald to Lauterbrunnen ahead of time? I was going to wait to see what the weather was like before purchasing.  Can you buy the ticket at the Grindelwald Grund Station?   We are in Grindelwald from May 24-28. So I thought it may be to cold for the cable car and gondola ride.

    Hi Miggles,

You can purchase the tickets on the day, directly from any of the train station. Be sure to present your Swiss Travel Pass to get the discount.

    Regards,

    Anna

    Hi Miggles,

    >> We are in Grindelwald from May 24-28. So I thought it may be to cold for the cable car and gondola ride.

First of all, the Männlichen mountain transport doesn’t reopen until 25 May 2024, but I think you already know that.

Both the cable car and the gondola are enclosed. I have ridden them in the middle of winter, and found the temperature no colder than it was just walking around outside.

As long as you are suitably dressed for walking around, I don’t think you will feel uncomfortable in the cable car or gondola.

    Hope this helps!

Your STP will take you up as far as Grindelwald and Wengen without further purchase. It’s only when you go further up by train or cable car that discounted tickets need to be bought.
