Best route by train from Wengen to Lucerne?

Short summary – read this first

Brad is planning a trip from Wengen to Lucerne and is looking for a quicker and more scenic route than the one suggested by Google Maps. He seeks recommendations for a better travel option, particularly one that goes east from Interlaken.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider taking the Golden Pass route via Meiringen for a scenic travel experience.
  • Use the SBB website or the SBB Mobile app for accurate train timetables and ticket purchases.
  • Ignore Google Maps for train routes; they work better for driving directions.

Yes, and it is a more scenic route known as the Golden Pass route (http://www.myswissalps.com/go ldenpass) via Meiringen.

Forget Google Maps and use the timetable on the SBB website (bit.ly/2HH1U7B) or the highly-recommended SBB Mobile app (bit.ly/2ICIUHi) to plan your travel, find fares* and buy tickets if required. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on this page – http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable. *SBB website shows half-fare prices by default, mobile app allows you to nominate full or half-fare and is also smart enough to offer you the Saver Day Pass (http://www.myswissalps.com/sa verdaypass) if that offers the best fare.

Thanks for that. I checked http://www.happyrail.com and it showed a direct route. Google maps is way out to lunch. Thanks for the speedy response!

Hi Manning999! Google Maps does a great job for car routes, not so much for train Swiss train connections though :-). The official timetable mentioned by Rockoyster is the way to go. It’s very complete and detailed. I’d use HappyRail primarily to book train tickets or passes, not for the timetable.
