What clothing to pack for Switzerland in May?

Short summary – read this first

A couple is visiting Switzerland for the first two weeks in May, traveling by train and staying two nights in cities like Zürich, Interlaken, and Zermatt. They are looking for packing advice to avoid overpacking while considering the varying weather conditions in different elevations.

Key takeaways:
  • Pack layers to accommodate different temperatures, especially in mountainous areas like Zermatt.
  • Include both summer and winter clothing for higher altitudes, as conditions can vary widely.
  • Roll your clothes to maximize space in your suitcase.

Good morning! My husband and I are coming to Switzerland the 1st 2 weeks in May. We arrive in Zürich & will travel exclusively by train staying 2 nights in each city. Our itinerary is as such: Zürich, lake Lucerne, Interlaken, Montreux, Zermatt, St Moritz, Lugano.

My question is,: How should I pack (clothing-wise) so as to not bring a ton of suitcases? (Don’t laugh at me… I tend to overpack)…

    Hi Shesha,

What a nice trip you’re planning. It’s a good question – you will be travelling to places with different elevations (e.g. Zermatt) and therefore the temperature will change not just according to the weather but also the altitude, see http://www.myswissalps.com/we ather for Swiss weather 🙂

Depending on the elevation you go to, for example if you go to mountain tops like Klein Matterhorn in Zermatt, you will actually need winter clothing as well as summer clothing. Layers are best in mountain weather. Most likely the weather will be good around May, and we’ve had a warm winter so far, but you never know, as there will still be snow in certain places up high.

Are you planning to do any hiking or walking? If so there is specific clothing for that too. I include a few links that might help:

In terms of not packing too much – if you don’t do this already, I would recommend you roll your clothes, it creates a lot more space in your suitcase 🙂

    Hope this helps!

    Maria.

Thank you so much Maria. I appreciate your input. PS. I will definitely try rolling my clothes. Thank you!
