What to do in Zermatt if it is raining?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler named Jli8324 is planning a trip to Zermatt next week but is concerned about possible cloudy or stormy weather that could obscure the Matterhorn. They are seeking suggestions for indoor activities and backup plans in case the weather does not permit outdoor sightseeing.

Key takeaways:
  • Visit the Matterhorn Museum, which is free to access with a Swiss Travel Pass.
  • Explore local spas and wellness options, many of which allow non-hotel guests.
  • Consider day trips to nearby charming towns like Brig and Sion, offering castles and unique sights.
  • If you're up for longer journeys, train rides to Montreux or Lausanne are still enjoyable in cloudy weather.

Looks like I may run into cloudy conditions or a storm during a good part of my upcoming Zermatt visit late next week through the weekend.

I’m wondering if there are any suggested activities if it is raining or cloudy and the Matterhorn is not visible?

I’m aware that forecasts especially in the mountains more than 2-3 days out are not reliable but I’d like to make backup plans in case it does happen.

    Hi Jli8324!

Wonderful you’ll be visiting Zermatt next week! It’s indeed too early to worry about forecasts (see our weather videos here: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLkL7xs9cCyet8HNZYfuu-HGscDSPj_nVo). But I understand you’d like to have back-up plans. A few are listed under “Bad weather activities” at http://www.myswissalps.com/zermatt. I’m not sure about your interests, but here are some options:

Fingers crossed you’ll have good weather during your stay in Zermatt!

Thank you for these options! The weather become slightly more favorable as the days get closer, honestly even a half day each with good weather in Zermatt would be great. I know in the mountains, the trick is to start the day early as the weather is usually more stable then.

I just found out my hotel has a spa so that’s always a back-up option and I did note down the Matterhorn museum.

Hope I don’t have to venture out of the valley too much, but Brig and Sion looks like nice options. I did stop by Brig many years ago for an hour to enjoy the peculiar looking castle.

The Jungfrau region and Montreux are already in my itinerary so I wouldn’t venture that far in bad weather. I wish Lugano was ‘closer’ as in I wish there was an express train from Zermatt instead of crossing into Italy and back.

    Hi Jli8324,

Lugano is indeed too far for a day trip. You can travel via Italy but you don’t have to. You can travel via Andermatt and Göschenen so you’ll stay in Switzerland all the way. But it’s still a long trip 🙂

    Have fun!
