    Hello feandri

    Welcome to MySwissAlps

what’s the best time to visit Zermatt?

That very much depends on what you want to do while you are there.

If it is hiking, I would say early June to mid-October.

If it is skiing I would say early December to mid-April.

If you just want to admire the scenery from the fabulous Gornergrat railway and from the various cable cars, either of these two periods.  I once had lunch at Gornergrat sitting outside on  …..New Year’s Day!

Avoid the ‘in between’ periods.  Gornergrat and Glacier Mountain Paradise will probably be open, but the village will be ‘dead’.

The Drawback of Zermatt  is that it is relatively remote.  The train ride from VISP takes 70 minutes.  If the weather is bad and you think ‘let’s visit a nice historic town’, the nearest is BRIG, 90 minutes away.  (Other possibilities would be Sion and BERN.)
The nearest large ‘other resort’, Saas Fee (https://www.myswissalps.com/town/saas-fee/) , is stunningly beautiful.  But it takes 90 minutes to get there – you take the train to Stalden-Saas from where you catch the (very efficient and very scenic) 511 bus .
There are hourly through trains to FIESCH, where a cable car goes up to Eggishorn. From the top station you get a fabulous view of the mighty Aletsch glacier (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/aletsch-glacier/)  ….  But the train ride to Fiesch takes two hours.

    Best wishes
    Roger

    Hi Fedeandri,

In addition to Roger’s helpful reply,  I agree, it really depends what you are planning to do whilst there.

Do take a read of our Zermatt guide in the meantime, lots of useful information for a visit to Zermatt.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda
