Where in the Bernese Oberland can we hear Alphorns in July?

Short summary – read this first

Marne and his wife are planning a week in Berner Oberland, plus a few days in Zermatt and St. Moritz. They want to know about Alphorn concerts or demonstrations during their trip. They've heard about events at Schynige Platte and are looking for confirmation and more details.

Key takeaways:
  • There is a daily Alphorn concert at Schynige Platte from 11 am to 2 pm, running from mid-June to mid-October.
  • On Swiss National Day (August 1st), you can hear Alphorn performances at festivities in Zermatt.
  • Check local tourist offices for any last-minute changes to event schedules.

My wife and I will be staying in Berner Oberland for about a week, plus a few days each in Zermatt and St. Moritz.  Are there regularly scheduled Alphorn concerts / demonstrations?  (I believe Schynige Plattte has something 11am-1pm.  True?)

    Hi Marne,

If you happen to be in Zermatt on Swiss National Day (1st August), festivities will be taking place and you will be able to hear the alphorn playing.  Also during summer there is the Zermatt Folklore festival on the weekend of August 11th taking place where you would also have another opportunity to hear and see the alphorn being played.

In the Bernese Oberland, correct there is a daily Alphorn concert at Schynige Platte railway station from 11am to 2pm.  Also on August 4th, there is a Alphorn festival taking place at Männlichen. Enclosed the links explaining how to reach both locations:

I hope something works out for you.  (Do check in with the respective local tourist offices, in case of any last minute changes).

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Hi Marne,

Alphorn players at Schynige Platte usually greet each arriving train with a short performance, between 11 am and 2 pm daily from 15 June to 20 October 2024. They also play from time to time on the restaurant terrace, but do take breaks during the day.

Otherwise, they can often be seen at community events, e.g. at festivities to celebrate the Swiss National Day on 1 August, harvest festivals, festivals celebrating the return of the cows from the alpine pastures etc.

Apart from community events, it’s often just a question of being in the right place at the right time. I saw an alphorn performance at Kleine Scheidegg around lunch time one Saturday in early September. It was quite a big group – 19 players, and they seemed to be rehearsing, as they just had ordinary clothes on (not traditional costumes) and there was quite a bit of stop-starting.

By the way, when you are in Zermatt, this might interest you:

    Hope this helps!

PS I was writing this at roughly the same time as Yolanda was, so I have duplicated a few things unfortunately!
