Where to buy groceries on a Sunday in Lucerne?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is arriving in Lucerne on a Sunday around 3 pm and needs to go grocery shopping. They are concerned about which grocery stores will be open since many places are closed on Sundays. Visiting the train station is the best option for them to find open stores.

Key takeaways:
  • Head to Lucerne train station where Coop and Migros are open until 22:00 on Sundays.
  • Almost all other stores are closed on Sundays, so planning to shop at the train station is essential.
  • Migros has a nostalgic reputation for some travelers, while others may prefer Coop, but both offer good options.

Migros and Co-op in Luzern main station are both open until 22.00 daily.

I have a nostalgic preference for Migros (despite living in the UK due to family connections I’ve been going to Migros for 57 years…) but my wife prefers Co-Op!

Supermarkets in railway stations and petrol stations are a comparitively new phenomenon in Switzerland but it has changed tourist travel, as you can nowadays buy foodstuff on a Sunday, which wasn’t the case a few years ago.

    <<“which wasn’t the case a few years ago.”>>

Except at Züri HBf, where Sunday shopping was available long before the workers lost their day of rest in the rest of Switzerland.
