    Hi Ardo,

Are you going to have a Swiss Travel Pass?

If yes, you do not need to buy bus or boat tickets, all you need to have to do is to pay for the 50% discounted cable car and cogwheel train tickets. See more details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/pilatus/tickets. You’ll also find the link to the Pilatus ticket prices at the end of the page, under the title ‘More information’. You can buy your tickets with the Swiss Travel Pass discount there.

A tip, do not buy it far in advance, make sure to check the weather forecast first. In case of rain you might want to change your travel plans. Buy the day before you want to travel to Pilatus.

OR you can buy your tickets on the spot too.

    I hope this helps,

    Ildiko

I recommend going the other way round for two reasons:

    1) it is easier to get to the base station at Alpnachstad (boat or train) and the base station buildings are obvious to see

    2) going up a cog wheel railway is usually more fun than coming down – on Pilatus you will get to really feel the fact that the Pilatusbahn railway is the steepest in the world (a special type of rack railway system was invented to cope with the extra steepness compared to other less steep cog railways such as Rigi). Reaching the top by railway rather than cable car has more of a sense of old fashioned achievement.

    Hi IIdiko.

Yes we do have a Swiss travel pass. So so we could buy the tickets using it. Thank you very much for your prompt response and also your tip about the weather. Didn’t think about it.

    kind regards

Thank you very much for your advice , my only concern is that some of the reviews which said the Aplna station could be busy on a Sunday , hence the thought of taking the gondola and coming down via cog train.

The perennial problem with reviews of any kind is that they are often specific to one person’s visit or experience of a product or place, in the case of Alpnachstad, perhaps a particular a date and time at Alpnachstad station.

The point is that if it is a busy day on Mount Pilatus in general, then it will be busy everywhere, ie at all access points and stations, and on all the transport up and down the mountain. If you obtain a relevant ticket, you will be able to travel

You can buy the reduced tickets at Lucerne train station at the SBB ticket office on the 1st floor. By doing so you can simply line up at base stations without going to the ticket booth first.

Tell the colleagues at the ticket office that you will hold the Swiss Travel Pass.

If you do not want to get into the SBB ticket office, you can buy it here too: https://shop.switzerlandtravelcentre.com/. This is the official tourist shop of SBB. You can also get the discount here for your Swiss Travel Pass.

    I wish you a great trip! 🙂
