Which Swiss airport to fly into from Heathrow?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler with a family of four is planning a trip from Heathrow to either Geneva or Zürich in July. They want advice on which airport to choose for reaching Mürren and are also considering whether taking a train from London to Switzerland is feasible in one day. They have never traveled to Europe or used a train before, so they feel a bit lost.

Key takeaways:
  • Both Geneva and Zürich airports are easy to navigate, but Basel is the best airport for getting to Mürren.
  • For a scenic journey, consider the Golden Pass route from Geneva to Mürren, though it takes about six hours.
  • Check the SBB Timetable for train schedules and planning your travel from London to Mürren.

Hello, my family of 4 will be traveling from Heathrow to either Geneva or Zürich in July. We plan on getting Swiss pass and traveling from airport to Murren(checking in hotel the same day) I’m looking at early flights arriving at either airport by 11 am. . Will spend 3 nights in murren and take train via Basel to France.

So, My question is… which airport should I use? I realize Geneva is a bit longer route, but only by an hour. From my reasesrch it looks like both routes from airports go by way of Bern. Is there scenery that we should really not miss coming from Geneva? Is one airport easier to get in and out of and into train station? Is there a better way all together to get from London to murren? Was thinking of maybe taking train all the way from London to Switzerland. Is that just too much travel in one day?

Thanks! Feeling lost 🙃 we have never been to Europe or on any train for that matter!

I have relatives in Geneva, but actually often fly London (Gatwick) to Zurich to start Swiss jaunts. Both Zurich and Geneva airport stations are easy to get to once you are off the plane. Geneva is a much smaller airport so less onerous.

Having said that, actually Basel is probably the best airport for Mürren.

I don’t recommend deviating on arrival in Switzerland, it is always best to get to your main accommodation stay from the airport in one go. Having said that you might feel like seeing the famous Jet d'Eau and UN building in Geneva on your way

From London by train is also a very nice way to reach Switzerland.

Hello HeathG and Welcome to MySwissAlps

The “scenic route” from Geneva to Mürren would take in the Golden Pass route (http://www.myswissalps.com/go ldenpass) via Montreux and Zweisimmen but that’s going to take you around 6 hours.

You can get from London (St Pancras) to Mürren (via Paris and Basel) by train in around 9½ hours.

Use the SBB Timetable (http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable) to plan your travel. If you are not familiar with using the timetable it will pay to first read the instructions on that page.

Have a look at http://www.myswissalps.com/tr aintickets/france for when you head to France.
