Which Itinerary is best coming from Colmar, France

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a trip from Colmar, France, on December 26th, wanting to see scenic spots in Switzerland like glacier lakes and mountains before heading to Austria via Zurich on December 29th. They're a family of four, including two teenage daughters, and seek recommendations for their itinerary and information about train and restaurant availability on the holiday.

Key takeaways:
  • Travelers may find some shops and restaurants closed on December 26th, but Swiss railways operate on a regular schedule.
  • Option 1 is recommended since it allows you to leave your luggage in Zurich before heading to Lucerne.
  • If choosing Option 2, consider that both itineraries can work well, so pick the one that fits your evening plans best.
  • Look for accommodation in Zurich and the Jungfrau region for a pleasant stay.
  • Always check train timetables in advance to avoid wasting time on short routes.

Travelling from Colmar, France on December 26th and would like to see some beautiful sites around Switzerland (Glacier lakes and mountainous views). I have identified 2 itineraries below. Please let me know which is better based on our criteria. Family of 4 with 2 teenage daughters, we prefer a walk-able city with restaurant options, non-skiers in route to Austria via Zurich on Dec 29. I understand December 26th is a holiday in that part of Europe – will trains, shops and restaurants have more of Sunday schedule or will things be closed?

Option 1: Day 1: Travel from Colmar to Interlaken to Grindelwald to Jungfrau or other nearby areas. Return to Interlaken and travel by train to Zurich Accommodation. Day 2: Travel from Zurich to Lucerne and surrounding areas and return to Zurich.

Option 2: Travel from Colmar to Interlaken to Grindelwald to Jungfrau or other nearby areas. Return to Interlaken or Grindelwald and stay over night. Day 2: Travel from Interlaken or Grindelwald to Lucerne for day trip and then onto Zurich for Accommodation.

Thanks in Advance. I’m overwhelmed 🙂

December 26 is not a holiday in all Cantons but is a holiday where you will be travelling on that day, so some things may be closed; but Swiss railways run essentially the same service throughout the year (apart from some commuter trains that don’t run weekends and holidays when people aren’t at school or at work)

Option 1 would be best as you can leave luggage in Zurich accomodation. Zurich – Luzern is a short train journey so perfectly OK

Hi Sarmilla and welcome to MySwissAlps,

funny, when I was reading your post I was thinking that it makes no sense to go back to Zurich if you are planning to go after to Lucerne, it is just wasting time, even if it is a short route (see timetable at http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable). Then I saw 1960man’s answer. That is right, as he suggested, you can leave your luggage at the accommodation or at the train station (http://www.myswissalps.com/tr ain/practical/luggage).

So I think both alternatives can work, it depends where you would like to spend the evening and night, do you mind if you sleep just 1 night at each place.

You can find accommodation in Zurich at http://www.myswissalps.com/zu rich/hotels and in the Jungfrau region at http://www.myswissalps.com/ju ngfrauregion/hotels.
