Which panoramic train from Interlaken to Lucerne?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a panoramic train trip from Interlaken to Lucerne in November and wants to know which trains to take. They specifically ask if the Golden Pass route goes in that direction. The replies clarify that the Luzern – Interlaken line is actually the Brünig Pass, and the best option is the Luzern – Interlaken Express, which has panoramic windows and runs frequently.

Key takeaways:
  • Take the LuzernInterlaken Express for great panoramic views, operating every hour throughout the day.
  • The Luzern – Interlaken line is officially known as the Brünig Pass, not the Golden Pass, so ignore that confusion.
  • The scenery on the Brünig Pass is less impressive compared to other routes like the Bernina Express, especially if you’ve just been in the Alps.

    Hi Criss,

There’s only one option so it’s an easy choice 🙂 Indeed the Golden Pass line connects Interlaken to Lucerne: http://www.myswissalps.com/go ldenpass.

First of all, ignore the phrase GoldenPass in this instance.

Current tourist branding can be confusing

The Luzern – Interlaken railway is actually the Brünig Pass (the true Goldenpass is just the MOB railway Zweisimmen – Montreux).

The Luzern – Meiringen – Interlaken line is the Brünig pass line operated by Zentralbahn (ZB), which put into service new trains a few years ago. They are dubbed “Luzern – Interlaken Express’. They are bright red and white and have big panoramic windows. Just take one of these trains which run every hour throughout the day.

Maybe others will have a different opinion than mine.. but I just did the Interlaken- Lucerne golden pass 3 days ago… And I have to say, my reaction was “that’s it?” … Let’s just say it didn’t wow me… I was on my way to Basel… I should have just gone via Bern and saved myself an hour travel time

Funnily enough I have just made this point in another thread.

Interlaken – Luzern is via a comparitively minor, low altitude pass route (Brünig) and the most scenic section is comparitively short, as well as there being quite a bit of forest along the way.

1960man…. Oh well… Hindsight 20/20… 🙂 … I had just spent a week in Wengen… And the views on the golden pass were a downgrade from what I had seen from my hotel room balcony… A few pretty towns along the lakes.. but it’s no Bernina Express… I’m going to try and find your earlier post about this leg of the train.

A yes, compared to Wengen it’s not that thrilling perhaps. The scenery is best when traveling TO the Jungfrau Region I guess 🙂 Then it adds to the experience of approaching the Alps and the scenery getting better.

Precisely, going away from the Alps is always going to be a disappointment, especially if you are heading home to a comparitively flat landscape like my home area near London!

This summer for me the depression came for me and my wife as we exited the Walensee area coming north on the motorway out of Graubünden.

take care 1960… From the look of your posts, you will be back to the alps in no time… meanwhile.. if you ever decide to visit Miami, let me know. I would love to pick your brains about Graubunden… Cheers.
