Which station in Chur to board the Glacier Express

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning to fly into Zurich and take a train to Chur to connect to the Glacier Express. They need clarification on which Chur station to disembark at and options if they miss their train due to delays.

Key takeaways:
  • Disembark at Chur main station to connect to the Glacier Express easily.
  • Take the first available train from Zurich Airport to Zurich HB, then to Chur.
  • If you miss the Glacier Express, regional trains to Zermatt are available, but reservations won't be reimbursed.
  • The best connection is from Zurich Flughafen 09:15, arriving at Chur by 10:52.

We will be flying in to Zurich ETA 0750 hrs and take the train from Zurich Fluhafen to Chur as we had reserved our seat on Glacier Express PE923 on 17th Feb 2023 leaving Chur to Zermatt @ ETD1105hrs.

We need advice on the correct “Chur ” train station that we should disembark from Zurich Fluhafen to Chur in order to change to the Glacier Express.

It appeared to me that there are several Chur stations i.e. Chur,Chur Denner Express,Komplatz,ChurWest, Chur Wiesental.Churwalden, Chuir Albula, etc and we need clarification here.

Are there alternatives in case we miss the train connection due to flight delay or custom clearance?

Awaiting for your prompt advice please..

You will be very tight for time. Any big delay will result in you missing the PE923 and wasting the reservation fee

You will need to take the first train you can from Flughafen to Zurich HB (main station), the latest train you can get is the IC3 route train departing Zurich HB at 09.38. This train will arrive at Chur main station at 10.52. The Glacier Express departs from a platform a few minutes walk from the platform that the IC train will arrive on.

All over Europe, there are local stations in and around cities, but if they have a placename suffix they will usually not be the main station (eg Chur West is a local station). The IC train from Zurich is final destination Chur so will arrive at the right place to connect to the Glacier Express.

Much appreciate your advice which is very helpful.

How far is walking distance from Zurich Airport to Zurich Flughafen?

Is there a difference between Chur station Vs Chur, Bahnhofplatz?

I check SBB Mobile portal & it appeared that the following train will depart directly from Zurich Flughafen to Chur

    IC5 0845hrs – Chur ETA 1043hrs

    IR75 0915hrs – Chur ETA 1052hrs

Awaiting for further advice to firm up our trip arrangement please.

Hi dphuaph, thanks for joining MySwissAlps!

Zurich Airport is just the English name for “Zürich Flughafen”, which is the German name. There’s no walking distance. You can board your train at the railway station of Zurich Airport. The trains can be found at the lowest level, called L-2. Please see http://www.myswissalps.com/airports/zurich for details.

Yes, there are several connections from Zurich Airport to Chur in the morning. Some are direct, other require a change of trains in Zurich. The 08:48 and 09:15 departures should get you in Chur in time, and it should be doable to catch one of those trains looking at your flight arrival time. If you don’t make it to the Glacier Express in time, you can take regional trains to Zermatt over the same route (https://www.myswissalps.com/glacierexpress/gettingthere). Your seat reservations won’t be reimbursed though.

    To clarify:

There are no direct fast trains Zurich Flughafen – Chur. To get the limited stop fastest express trains to Chur, you must always travel to Zurich HB (main station) first.

The two connections you listed require a change of train at Zurich HB:

    1) Flughafen 08.48 (not 08.45) – Zurich HB 08.57/09.12 Chur 10.43 (a slower train Zurich – Chur which you would be best to avoid)

    2) the best option: Flughafen 09.15 – Zuruch HB 09.25/09.38 Chur 10.52
