Winter hiking places in March/April in Switzerland

Short summary – read this first

Ohman91 is planning a winter hiking trip in Switzerland from late March to mid-April and is looking for recommendations for good areas to hike at mid to high altitudes. They have previously hiked in places like Zermatt and want to know if Appenzell or Engelberg would be suitable options, particularly seeking areas with snowy trails.

Key takeaways:
  • Consider hiking in the Upper Engadine for snow trails around that time of year.
  • The Ticino region is a great alternative with many trails likely free from snow during March and April.
  • Lugano and Locarno are both excellent starting points for exploring Ticino, with easy train travel between them.

    Good morning,

First of all, once again thank you for an amazing forum and I’m so happy to read about the new Corona news! 🙂

Is there anyone that can suggest one or two good destinations/valleys where you can have some nice (winter) hikes in end of March and middle of April? 🙂

Basically normal hiking with winter boots along trails/snow trails, so nothing advanced. Mid/high altitude if possible.

Last I did during a winter was in Zermatt from Gornergrat and down which I really enjoyed.

I have been to the following places during Summers/Autumns for hiking: Grindelwald, Wengen, Lauterbrunnen, Lucerne, Rosenlaui, Aletsch Arena, Oeschinensee, Interlaken, Brunnen.

Would maybe Appenzell or Engelberg be good options? Or any place in the Ticino area?

    Thank you all in advance!

    Hi Ohman,

Yes, it’s great news, right? You’re a little bit late in the season but there should still be options. Not so much in the lower to mid altitudes though. I did a great hike in the snow from Rigi Kaltbad to Rigi Scheidegg once in late April. That was luck though, you can’t count on snow at 1500-1600 m around that time.

I recommend the Upper Engadine: http://www.myswissalps.com/upperengadine.

    Hi Arno,

Yes, very good. So happy to read about it! Hope more countries will follow.

Thank you for the tips! Engadine was also on my mind actually, so I will take a look at that tonight 🙂

Ah, I thought it would be snow at the time. But if it’s no snow, that is even better! I just assumed that there would be snow, hence my title and initial question 🙂 When I was walking to Schynige Platte in June there was still some snow, so that’s why I thought it would be more snow in March/April.

So if anyone got some more good suggestions at 1500-2500 m, which doesn’t have to include snow, I am more than happy to take that also! 🙂

The Appenzeller Alps region is great for hiking in Spring as it is generally a lower altitude area. There are lots of lovely trails through farmland and on the lower slopes of the area’s mountains. The towns and villages are very interesting too.

    Hi Ohman91,

The Ticino region also offers many great hiking options in early Spring without the snow. The following attractions have numerous trails at the top:

You can find more hiking options in the Ticino region here: http://www.myswissalps.com/ticino/activities

Thanks both of you for your help! 🙂

Let’s say that I maybe go 17-22nd of March – Do you think it will be free from snow by this time? Only a month away. Or should I expect some snow?

Or would it be better to go in April, around Easter, for that?

    Kind regards,

    Jonas.

    Hi Jonas,

The probability of no snow in March and April is higher in the southern region such as Ticino. Elsewhere you are better off hiking trails on lower elevations. In the Jungfrau region for example, most hiking trails would not be in accessible anyway at this time of the year.. Be sure to read this before your trip: http://www.myswissalps.com/besttimetovisit

Thanks Anna 🙂 I think for this trip, in March or April (depending on what I decide), I will go for Ticino. It’s on my bucket list, so then I can do another region in the summer 🙂

Would you say that Lugano is the best town to proceed from, or is maybe Locarno a better option?

    Hi Ohman 91,

My personal preference would be Locarno. But Lugano is also a good starting point. There are regular trains connecting the two and takes just 30 mins to travel.
