Winter in the Alps between Christmas and New Years
Wendywired is planning a winter trip to the Alps, spending Christmas in Verbier, Switzerland, and New Year's in Salzburg, Austria, with about five days for travel. She seeks train-only recommendations showcasing beautiful scenery, with a focus on regions in Italy or France that are open during winter. Good food and wine, along with charming towns or cities, are her interests.
- Consider taking a train to Montreux and then the Golden Pass line to Interlaken, visiting car-free Mürren or Wengen in the Jungfrau region for stunning views.
- Another option is to travel to Brig and ride the Glacier Express to St. Moritz, where you can choose from several appealing towns in the Upper Engadine region.
- Don’t forget to explore local restaurants for delicious food and wine options while you're there.

Hello, I am planning to visit the Alps this winter. I will be in Verbier, Switzerland for Christmas and Salzburg, Austria for New Years, leaving 5 days or so to travel in the region. I have been to Zermatt, but haven’t seen much else in the French, Italian, Swiss or Austrian Alps region. Does anyone have any recommendations that would 1) be possible only by train, 2) showcase some interesting scenery, 3) perhaps involve Italy or France, and 4) be open at this time of year? I love good food and wine, small towns and large cities are equally interesting. Skiing is not a requirement, as I will have skied in Verbier.
Thanks in advance for your help!
