Cannot thank you enough for the helpful information, links, and suggested itineraries for our early Oct trip to Switzerland last year. Always wanted to do a train trip through the country rather than airline city stops.

We travelled with an 8 day 1st class Swiss Travel Pass (https://www.myswissalps.com/travel-ticket/swiss-travel-pass/). No problems, so easy to use, trains were not crowded and seats were super comfortable. No reservations except for seats on Panoramic trains and reduced rates on attractions.

Started at Zurich airport – to Chur overnight, Bernina Express (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/bernina-express/) to Tirano then back to St Moritz for overnight. Next day, Glacier Express (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/glacier-express/) to Zermatt for 2 nights with trips to Gornergrat (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/gornergrat/) and Glacier Paradise (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/matterhorn/). Stunning scenery.

Next, train to Lauterbrunnen then Wengen for 2 nights.  From Wengen we visited Schilthorn (https://www.myswissalps.com/activity/schilthorn/) instead of Jungfraujoch. Glad we did that, cheaper, not crowdwd and incredible scenery. Loved the walk through lovely Murren. From the top, went down via Stechelberg. What a gondola ride! Might add, Lauterbrunnen Valley one of the most beautiful places I have been in my 50 plus years of world travel.

Bus to Trummelbach Falls then back to Wengen. Next day off to Lucerne for overnight. We did a short stop in Lauterbrunnen on the way hoping to fit in a boat tour of the lake but everything was booked up for our time frame. We did do a boat ride in Lucerne and also did some sightseeing there. Back to Zurich next day.

    A few extra notes :
Weather was just beautiful the whole time. No hidden mountaintops. How lucky we were. Thanks again to you guys for arranging that! To all those who are concerned age is a factor for this type of trip, I am 79 and other than an ever so slight feeling of unsteadiness at the highest elevations I managed just fine. My tripmates were 20 years younger. Took my trekking pole and walked all over. Am hoping  to return and see what I missed!

For accommodations we booked homes, apartments. All very nice.
I started planning this trip a year in advance with a look everyday at your website for info and tips. Success was  all due to your great information. THANK YOU !

    Suzanne

    Hello Suzanne

Thank you for this wonderful trip report which I thoroughly enjoyed reading!  I am of similar ‘vintage’ to yourself.  The big difference is that I have been visiting Switzerland regularly ever since 1971.

I rejoice that you found the First Class Swiss Travel Pass so convenient and comfortable.  I have been investing in First Class Swiss Travel Passes ever since they were introduced (under another name) in 1972.

I particularly note your comment,  ‘From Wengen we visited Schilthorn, instead of Jungfraujoch. Glad we did that, cheaper, not crowded and incredible scenery.’   A lot of people (myself included) would agree with you.

    Lake Boats

One comment puzzles me.   ‘We did a short stop in Lauterbrunnen on the way hoping to fit in a boat tour of the lake but everything was booked up for our time frame.’   Lauterbrunnen is not on any lake!  I suspect you meant Interlaken, or the towns/lakes of Thun or Brienz.

I am delighted you got a trip in on Lake Lucerne.  Boat rides on that beautiful lake are NEVER going to be a problem.  There is a good service 365-days-a-year.  The boats have a lot of capacity, and if the shipping company thinks that a particular journey is going to be busy, they will arrange a relief boat running just in front of the timetabled boat.

Thanks again, and very best wishes

    Roger

    Hi Suzanne,

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful review. Pleased to hear that your Swiss train journey turned out exactly as you had hoped and that the Swiss Travel Pass made traveling so smooth and enjoyable. Sounds like a wonderful itinerary so happy to know you were able to experience the Bernina Express, Glacier Express, Zermatt, and the Jungfrau region with perfect weather condition! under such perfect weather condition.

I hope you get to come and visit this beautiful country again!
