Hi

My husband and I are planning a trip for next April. (2020). We do not have many days of leave and hence planning how to optimize it.

We would like to take the Glacier express from Zermatt to Zurich.

Would it be advisable to change get off the Glacier express at Chur and change to another train that bring us back to Zurich? (Chur to Zurich) Is the changing of train easy, ie. in the same station?

Or would you suggest another way to get to Zurich?

Nice to hear you’re planning a trip to Switzerland.

The Glacier Express only runs between Zermatt and Chur (and then St. Moritz) so as you say you will have to take a regular train between Chur and Zurich.

One more question regarding the Glacier express pls.

I follow the link to the booking site.

Can i reserve the panoramic wagon when i book the tickets? Can’t seems to do so. The website state that the 1st class panoramic car are 11, 21 & 31, but i do not get to select the car number when i book the tickets. Am i doing something wrong?

Hi Yee Hwee. I’m not sure which link you’ve followed. Note that all coaches on the Glacier Express are panoramic. As long as you select a 1st class ticket, you’ll automatically be assigned seats in one of the 1st class cars. Quite some booking sites don’t allow travelers to pick their own coach and seat indeed. Does this answer your question?

You will arrive in Chur station usually on track 10 or 11. The main line express to Zurich will leave from tracks 7, 8 or 9 usually – it’s dead easy

I too am going Zermatt to Zurich. I need to be there by 3:00 In looking at the schedule it doesn’t appear to be any way to ride the GEX and get there by then? Or did I read the schedule wrong?

Earliest possible arrival in Zurich via Chur is 15.23, but since you haven’t specified a date of travel it is hard to advise exactly.

The attached will get you to Zurich by 14:23. You can’t get there by 15:00 using the GEX but you can using the regular train connections in the attachment. The scenery is just the same.

Bit of an early start called for I’m afraid.

• History – it’s been running for decades originally transporting the rich and famous from one ski resort to another
• It got it’s name from the fact it passed a glacier but no longer does since the tunnel under the Furka Pass was built
• “in-flight” meal service and en-route commentary
• panoramic windows
• Single train Zermatt to St Moritz – no changes.
