Zermatt: Glacier Paradise/Matterhorn Glacier Trail

Short summary – read this first

Melissa is planning a trip to Klein Matterhorn from Zermatt in late September. She wants to know about the best ticket options for the cable cars, specifically whether to get return tickets or single tickets for her journey, as well as the availability of certain routes. She's looking for guidance on ticket purchases and trip logistics.

Key takeaways:
  • The cable car routes to Klein Matterhorn are open in September, so you can go ahead with your plans.
  • Purchase single tickets for Zermatt-Klein Matterhorn, Klein Matterhorn-Trockener Steg, and Schwarzsee-Zermatt as needed.
  • If you have a rail pass, show it when buying tickets for discounts.

    Hi there,

We plan to do a trip late September to Klein Matterhorn from Zermatt:

    a) Cable car to Matterhorn Glacier Paradise, then

    b) Hike from Trockener Steg to Schwarzsee (Matterhorn Glacier Trail), then

    c) Cable car from Schwarzsee back to Zermatt

Would it be more worth it to get the return tickets for Zermatt – Matterhorn Glacier Paradise? Or single way tickets?

I checked and couldn’t find any Matterhorn Glacier Paradise to Trockener Steg single way cable car ticket. Also no Schwarzsee back to Zermatt via cable car? Are they not open during that time?

    Thanks and best regards,

    Melissa

Hi Melissa, thanks for joining MySwissAlps!

Don’t worry, the cable car routes you mention are all open in September. Most mountain transportation around Zermatt is available until October 13 2019. If I understand your plans correctly, you need the following tickets:

    • single ticket Zermatt-Klein Matterhorn/Glacier Paradise;
    • single ticket Klein Matterhorn/Glacier Paradise – Trockener Steg
    • single ticket Schwarzsee-Zermatt

Did you use the SBB timetable in search for ticket prices? It may not show prices for September yet, as it usually only shows prices for 30 days ahead. It’s explained at myswissalps.com/timeta ble.

You can buy these tickets on the spot at the valley, midway or mountain stations. Just explain about your plans and you’ll get the right tickets. If you have a rail pass, don’t forget to show it in order to get the applicable discounts (myswissalps.com/train/ ticketspasses/practica l/chooserailpass). More information can be found at myswissalps.com/kleinm atterhorn.
