Zermatt: Peak2Peak ticket – hop on, hop off?

Short summary – read this first

Karen from Singapore is planning a day trip on December 27, 2023, to visit the Matterhorn Glacier and Gornergrat using the Peak2Peak card. She needs advice on hopping on and off between various stations like Furi and Riffelberg without paying extra and wants to ensure she doesn't duplicate routes.

Key takeaways:
  • You can hop on and off at any station with the Peak2Peak ticket, but avoid using the same route again.
  • Having the Swiss Travel Pass gives you a discount on the Peak2Peak ticket; check for purchase options online.
  • It's best to buy your Peak2Peak ticket a day in advance, depending on the weather conditions.

    Hello from Singapore!

With PEAK2PEAK card, I will visit Gornergrat and Matterhorn Glacier. In between the journey, can I hop on & hop off to these places without paying extra ?

    – Riffelberg

    – Trockener Steg – have a chill at the Ice Bar

    – Schwarzsee station

    – Furi station

    – Rotenboden Station

If can hop on & hop off without paying extra, can someone here please guide me how shall I plan the routes for this particular day on 27 Dec 2023?

    Thanks A Million!!

    Karen

    Hi Karen,

With the Peak2Peak ticket, that’s right you can combine a trip to Gornergrat and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise in one excursion. You could start by taking the cable car and gondola to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. Then ride the cable car between Furi and Riffelberg , so you don’t have to travel all the way back to Zermatt to ride the cogwheel train up to reach Gornergrat. This trip can also be done in reverse.

The pass is valid for one day and you are free to hop on and off at any station in between, as long as you do not duplicate the route. (It’s not unlimited travel, if that makes sense).

When purchasing your Peak2Peak ticket, if you have a rail pass, you are entitled to a discount (see attached link for examples: https://www.myswissalps.com/gornergrat/tickets

    I hope this helps.

    Kind regards,
    Yolanda

    Hi Yolanda,

Once again, thanks for always being there for all my questions.

Can you double check for me if below itinerary is correct that there is no duplicated stops?

    1. Zermatt- Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
    2. Matterhorn Glacier Paradise – Furi
    3. Furi – Riffelberg
    4. Riffelberg – Gornergrat
    5. Gornergrat – Zermatt

The starting point is Zermatt GBB right ?

And we will be holding STP and will visit the mountains on 27 December.

I have no chance to see the sheeps and cows during winter right ? Any chance, where can I “run into” them ?

    Thanks

    Karen

    Hi Karen,

Yes, per the above, all good to run with. That’s great you will have the Swiss Travel Pass, you’ll receive a discount for your Peak2Peak ticket.

In case you need some purchase options for the Swiss Travel Pass, you can take a look here:

As you are heading to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise fist, all information for reaching the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise from Zermatt explained in the below link. So yes, the start is Zermatt gondola station:

Just a reminder, don’t buy your Peak2Peak ticket too in advance, best to check the weather is favourable. A day in advance should be OK. Be a shame to head up to both mountains only to be surrounded by clouds.

Unfortunately no opportunity to “run into” cows or sheep in winter. That said, I understand there is a guided tour during the winter to view the Blacknose sheep at the farm. You can check with the local tourist office when you are there.

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

    Dear Yolanda,

    Thank you so much again.

    For sure this is the basic of my trip;

    1. Zermatt GBB- Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
    2. Matterhorn Glacier Paradise – Furi
    3. Furi – Riffelberg
    4. Riffelberg – Gornergrat
    5. Gornergrat – Zermatt

Last night I checked through the internet and found that there are few other interesting stops too. I hope I can explore all as the tickets are not cheap.

Can you kindly advise me how shall I add below 3 stations into above itineary that there will not be any duplication visits,

    – Trockener Steg – have a chill at the Ice Bar

    – Schwarzsee station

    – Rotenboden Station

    Thanks

    Karen

    Hi Karen,

Trockener Steg is one of the stations between Furi and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise. You can reach Schwarzsee by taking a gondola down from Trockener Steg. Or in reverse, you can take the gondola from Furi. Please refer to this link for information about how to reach the summit of Matterhorn Glacier Paradise: http://www.myswissalps.com/kleinmatterhorn

Rotenboden is the station just before the summit station when you take the cogwheel train up to Gornergrat. Further details here: http://www.myswissalps.com/gornergrat/gettingthere
