Train direction Zermatt to Bern?

Short summary – read this first

A traveler is planning a train trip from Zermatt to Bern on the morning of September 29th and is confused about the differences in train directions listed in the SBB timetable. They seek clarity on the significance of the train directions to Visp and Fiesch, as well as recommendations for the best route to take.

Key takeaways:
  • If you have the time, take the scenic route via Brig and Kandersteg for stunning views instead of the faster, tunnel route.
  • To reach Bern, change at Visp for the direct train through the tunnel, or take the scenic route via Brig on the ‘Lötschberger’ train.
  • Sit on the left side of the train between Brig and Spiez to enjoy views of the Rhone Valley, and on the right side from Spiez to Bern for Lake Thun views.

    Hello everyone,

I have tried to use the SBB time table, planning my timetable for Zermatt to Bern estimated morning on 29th Sep.

There are 3 results shown, for eg

    1) Departs 11:37am Direction VISP

    2) Departs 12:13pm Direction Fiesch

    3) Departs 12:37am Direction VISP

I checked the stops and they all show the same stops, anyone can enlighten what is the difference between the direction VISP and Fiesch ?

    I’m not seeing Fiesch anywhere.

If your timetable permits then I strongly recommend you take the route via Brig and Kandersteg. You will then travel between Brig and Spiez on the Regio-Express Lötschberger train over the traditional, more than 100 year old mountain route, giving you a wonderful view along the impressive peaks and down into the Rhone Valley. The 1-hour faster route Visp direct to Spiez takes you through the fairly lengthy Lötschberg Base Tunnel with rather limited views.

    First a bit of background:

The railway to Zermatt was originally the Visp – Zermatt (VZ) railway, it was then extended to Brig and became the Brig – Visp – Zermatt (BVZ). In 2003 it merged with the Furka Oberalp railway (Brig – Andermatt – Disentis) to become the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB)

As such, tradtionally trains ran Visp – Zermatt or Brig – Zermatt, so in the direction you are going that is Zermatt – Visp or Zermatt – Brig.

The current service pattern on the MGB is that Zermatt – Brig trains continue beyond Brig to Fiesch, so that is why some departures from Zermatt are ‘destination Fiesch’

To travel to Bern, either go to Visp and change into the direct fast train though the base tunnel to Spiez and Bern, or take the train to Brig and travel ver the old mountain route on the ‘Lötschberger’ service

    Hi DSL,

The train direction just means the last stop of the train. Brig or Visp or Fiesch etc. Those trains are given to you as options because all trains will work for your train trip. http://www.myswissalps.com/ti metable

Thanks everyone, just a note in the direction from Zermatt to Bern and to enjoy views on the Rhone Valley, should I be seated on the left or right side of the train ?

right side if I recall correctly! I doubt your train will be too busy in late September so you can move around as needed.

    Hello DSL,

You might want to swap around as Lucas says. Between Brig and Spiez on the Regio-Express Lötschberger train you want to be on the left to enjoy the Rhone Valley. From Spiez the right side is good for views of Lake Thun.
