Zurich airport – Lucerne, train platform is where?

Short summary – read this first

A family is visiting Switzerland for the first time and arriving at Zurich Airport next week. They need advice on how to get from the airport to the train platform to catch a direct train to Lucerne, where they will stay at Waldstätterhof Luzern. They're excited and have their Swiss Travel Passes ready, hoping for a smooth start to their trip.

Key takeaways:
  • The train station is located on the lower levels of Zurich Airport, and it's well signposted.
  • Trains to Lucerne leave directly from the airport every hour, so check the timetable for the next departure.
  • Follow the signs (Bahn/railway) to reach the platforms easily.
  • If you have time before your train, explore the shopping mall nearby for snacks from Migros.

    Hello,

My family and I are visiting Switzerland for the first time and looking forward to many scenic train rides within the country. We will be arriving at the Zurich Airport (ZRH) next week at 8:55 AM from Philadelphia and need to take the appropriate train to our first destination in Lucerne. We have our Swiss Travel Passes and would like to understand how we get from the airport terminal to the actual train platform which will take us to Lucerne. Any help in making this a smooth process would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your guidance!

    Hello DJL1,

Next week, you must be all getting quite excited! That’s great you have your Swiss Travel Passes all organised too 🙂

More Zurich airport details can be found here: https://www.myswissalps.com/airports/zurich but essentially the airport train station is located in the lower levels of the airport. Upon exit, it is very well sign posted, you can easily walk there.

Do use the timetable so you can also gauge train times: https://www.myswissalps.com/timetable

    Kind regards,

    Yolanda

Yes, we are very excited. Thank you for the airport and timetable links. I now see that there are direct trains to Lucerne, which leave from Zurich airport every hour. Our first stay is at the Waldstatterhof Luzern, which I believe is directly across the street from the train station. Hopefully a stress free start to our vacation.

Thank you again for your help!

The railway platforms are beneath the terminal building area at Zurich Flughafen.

Just follow the signs from the arrivals areas to the station (there are direction signs in words (Bahn / railway) and train pictograms) around the terminal. When you reach the upper circulating area just look at the white and blue (with train category eg IC in red) departure screen (these are a standard type across all main stations so you will get used to them

If you find you have time to wait for the next direct train to Luzern, just make use of the shopping mall, perhaps for buying a picnic from Migros (one of the famous Swiss supermarkets) which is not far from the station area.
